a lot of law students major in linguistics because you need to understand how people may act on the witness stand nd what it may mean

Yes, there are lots of things that you can try. I know that listening to music and reading the lyrics at the same time really helped me learn Spanish and Portuguese, plus I enjoyed it.

I also used to watch movies with the subtitles in the foreign language, so that as the people were speaking, I could read what they were saying. This doesn't always work, because subtitles have to be shorter than the spoken word so that you have enough time to read them, but it still helps.

You should also check out websites that are written in German and English (in your case), so that you can see how entire sentences have been translated.

The most important thing, though, is to keep at it, day after day. It's somewhat like running or working out at the gym. You only get better if you do it consistently.
