Social Studies Lesson Plans For Elementary

Miriam Said:

I need help doing a lesson plan!?

We Answered:

Dear Brenda,
It is not plagiarism if you look up the internet for ideas and then adapt them for your own use.
It is the same with lesson plans. You look at the forms that others use and adapt them to suit the subject and topic that you are covering.
No-one is expected to work inside a vacuum and we spend our whole life learning from others and adapting their advice.
You can build an exciting series of lessons around tangrams - it worked just great for me many times.
Construct them during a Maths lesson then re-arrange the bits into a picture for Art and then write a story about your picture.

Look up "Constructing Your Own Set of Tangrams" and get an article
by Tom Scavo in Google and you will get what I tried to copy below but it didn't copy the illustrations but you can do these for yourself.
Other articles on Tangrams will probably give other ideas such as kids re-arranging the bits to copy common objects.

Materials
a rectangular piece of paper suitable for folding
a pair of scissors
a ruler (optional)

Activities
A complete set of tangrams consists of seven pieces:

a small square
two small congruent triangles
two large congruent triangles
a medium-size triangle
a parallelogram

You can make your own set of tangrams from a single piece of paper.

Just follow these simple steps:
Fold a rectangular piece of paper so that a square is formed. Cut off the extra flap.

Cut the square into two triangles.

Take one triangle and fold it in half. Cut the triangle along the fold into two smaller triangles.

Take the other triangle and crease it in the middle. Fold the corner of the triangle opposite the crease and cut.

Fold the trapezoid in half and fold again. Cut along both folds.

Fold the remaining small trapezoid and cut it in two.

HELP! Elem. teaching interview and need a 10 min. lesson plan...?

We Answered:

Wow...I'm so sorry I cannot help, but I'm 18 and am planning to major in Elementary Education in the future. Is every teacher required to teach in front of a panel before they are hired? Or is it required just for the school you are interviewing for?

Beatrice Said:

Elementary Teachers what is the typical curriculum by grade level? ?

We Answered:

In the early grades, you will be teaching math, language arts, science, and social studies. Depending on if your school has other teachers for the subjects, you might also end up being responsible for art and PE lessons.

If you go to your state's department of education website, you should be able to access something called "benchmarks" or "standards." These are very detailed guides of what should be introduced, practiced and mastered at each grade. Also, school districts often list their specific curriculum and teaching programs on their websites as well.

When you go to college, your major will be elementary education and you will be qualified to teach any elementary grade (depending on your state again, but it is usually K-6) after you graduate and get your license. If you enjoy the lower grades, you may want to add a minor or program for Early Childhood Education Some states require this to teach lower grades, some just prefer it. In some colleges is it just an add-on and some it is a seperate program. You will also probably have the option to minor in one or two subjects of interest to you...again, it depends on your state and college. In many states this will allow you to teach in middle school in that subject once you test for it. English and Math are always good choices since these are so imporant...in your case I would choose English (unless your goal is to be a social studies teacher)...because a teacher with training and interest in reading and writing is a valuable asset.

Remember, you may find that you have a different grade or subject interest when you get through college. You can always make changes. I thought for sure I wanted to be in early childhood when I started, but then realized I loved teaching in fourth grade!

Need help with some World Fair Lesson Plans...?

We Answered:

Take a look at "The Devil In the White City" by Erik Larsen. It's well-researched and documented and deals pretty extensively with the social transformation as people, especially young adults, flooded to Chicago from rural areas.

Ruby Said:

Have you ever received or given to a scholarshp fund? Were you considered for one?

We Answered:

Hey Dru... Sorry I am of the male gender. That didn't slow them down. Don't listen to the a**holes who are now answering your Question. I am with you kid. I left school at 15 (earliest age available to me) to escape the trap that society never really made available to me, (they just flung it around like, Hey look what we could do for you if we thought you were somebody and we thought you worthy of 'our' attention)
Well guess what 'folks'. I made it without you. By your standards (if you had any) I did. I have not and will not treat my fellow humans as you have treated your 'less enabled and lesser born' as you have. What goes around, comes around. And your turn is up.
L.O.L. girl. You earned it.
