Study Abroad Semester

Clyde Said:

Is it a good idea to study abroad the fall semester of my senior year?

We Answered:

It is a great idea to get some foreign exposure while you can. This will be a valuable experience for your future. If you have a chance to do it and you pass it up, you'll always regret it.

Elizabeth Said:

About how much does it typically cost to study abroad for a semester in college?

We Answered:

It totally depends on the program you go through and where you go. Many programs cost about the same for tuition as your own college does, but you will have to pay additional money for flights, housing, etc. You'll also have to purchase international insurance, and often there are fees for program maintenance (i.e. staff) that you don't get at your home university.

When you figure out which college you're going to transfer to, check out their international education office (every college has one). They will be able to tell you which programs they offer and how much they cost. Many colleges have collaborative programs with certain universities abroad that you can do for nearly the same price as your tuition at their college (plus a flight). Also look at scholarships. There is often funding you can apply for to study abroad.

For me, studying abroad actually ended up being cheaper than going to my college! It's hard to believe, but it's true. I got a scholarship to pay for it, and since my program tuition included my housing, I paid less than I would have at home! Good luck!!

my girlfriend is going to France to study abroad for a semester. i need a going away present.?

We Answered:

Make her a "Hope You Have a Great Trip" card, and then go to your local post office and change out some US dollars for Euros and enclose the Euros in the card that way she can have some spending money for the trip!

Edinburgh or Glasgow for study abroad spring semester?

We Answered:

From a purely academic viewpoint, University of Glasgow wipes the floor with Napier (which only recently added "Edinburgh" to its name to make it more popular). The Independent newspaper has just released its league table and has Glasgow at #29. Napier doesn't appear. Of the 13 universities in Scotland, Glasgow is at #3, Napier #10.

Note that the "University of Edinburgh" is not the same as Napier, and is at #11 in the overall table, #2 in Scotland, and in world-wide surveys comes out near the top.

There is great rivalry between the residents Edinburgh and Glasgow, and you can easily get the train cheaply and quickly from the centre of one to the other, so anything said here about the nightlife and people will probably be biassed. Edinburgh is much smaller, so easier access to the countryside and holds the world's largest festival of arts/theatre/culture etc in August (but could be said to have 48 weeks a bit barren!). Glasgow comes from an industrial/trade/shipping heritage, where as Edinburgh from a law/finance/education.

If you could get the course you want at the University of Edinburgh, you'd win both ways. But then I'm from Edinburgh!
