But if want to study Chinese language I think Shanghai International Studies University is a good choice.

I constantly hear from the news that there're over half a million Taiwanese, including family members and kids, residing in Shanghai. American and Japanese should also be quite a large population as there're so many American and Japanese firms in Shanghai but no statistics ever heard. As someone above suggests, grab a copy of the free English monthly magazine distributed in most restaurants and hotel lobbys and you'll see what the latest happenings are among the expat communities in the city. You could also log onto their respective websites. Have a wonderful stay!

^^ i'm a studying xi'an jiaotong university
xi'an jiaotong university is also the top 9 university of China(China has about 1800+ universities)
there are many overseas students(more than 3000) but the fact is there are much much much more Chinese students(more than 30000) and there are about 40+ universities in xi'an about 400000 university students
so
the environment is not a problem at all
