If you only want to study English, you do not really need IELTS. The English schools in the universities accept your application straight away. You just need to fill in the application form, mention how long do you want to study, then that's it!

However, later when you do want to study in the university for bachelor or masters degree, that's when you need to take the test, either IELTS or their own English test so they know whether or not your level of English proficiency is sufficient for you to be successful in your study.

The English course held in universities do not vary by much. However it is better that you do not go to the English school that has plenty of students from your home country, as obviously you then speak your own language all the time. It will be a waste of time and money.

I believe that there's no scholarship for English language study only in Australia. Only if you want to study the degree program.

Unfortunately you did not mention which country you come from.

My best suggestion will be to go to where there are not many students from the same country as yours. The reason being is, by not meeting many students from the same country, you are forced to speak English all the time. For example, I know there are plenty of Indonesian in Perth. Therefore I will never recommend any Indonesians to come to Perth if they only want to study English. It will be a waste of time and money.

Also... what do you want to do after English course? Study more? Immigrate? If you want to study more (like Masters course), then it is better to take the English course at the uni that you want to study later. This will save you some money by not needing to take another IELTS test as proof of your English proficiency.

In regards to work, depend on what visa r u coming to Australia with. If you come with tourist visa, it is (maybe) easier to get, but you can only study max. 3mths and then have to return home and you can't work at all. If you come with student visa, it is harder to get, but you can study as long as you like and you can work max 20hrs/week during semester study period and full-time only during semester holiday period.

I think the country is great, but then that should be expected asking in the Australia section from us Aussies. We speak Queens English here (like Britain does) but with a different accent and a few of our own words thrown in for good measure. There are differences between the way we speak English and the way Americans do, but only so much as the British are different from them too. Australia is a much safer country with a far better economy than many places in the world right now. We are very cosmopolitan and have cultures from all over the world here. Come over and have a great time.
