I got into top 15 PhD programs right out of college with similar statistics. I had pretty high GRE scores, though (2250/2400).

The thing I did is made sure I addressed my GPA in my cover letter. I explained that if you excluded my freshman year, I would have graduated with honors and that the work I did as a junior and senior was more indicative of how I would do in graduate school.

I did well in graduate school after college, but did not complete the degree. I later went back and now have an MBA from Duke and a PhD from Berkeley.

Apply to a few schools -- including at least one that you think is a reach.

Both are degrees that you pretty much have to go to grad school to get a really great job and you can pretty much go to grad school in the same types of things with either degree. A lot of people with either degree go to grad school for counseling, social work, therapy, and teaching. you kind of have to think about what you want to do in the long term. if you think you may want to be a psychologist? go with psych. think you may want to be a lawyer or teach at university level? go with soc. I was a soc major and now i'm going to law school. my bestfriend was a psych major and now going to fashion school. they are both really general degrees that you can do a lot with.

Quite honestly the name of the school doesnt matter as long as you get a good education. If youre getting a better education in india, then take it. theres no point in coming here to some obscure college just so you can say you studied abroad...
