Study In South Africa

Max Said:

Is it safe to study abroad in South Africa; even if I'm from Compton, CA?

We Answered:

Hey,
Dont let "what you have read" add to your stress and make you change your mind about studying/living in South Africa; ESPECIALLY if you plan on moving to Cape Town.
In terms of safety; it really depends on the area; e.g. are you going to walk alono at night in the townships (informal settlements)? are you going to chose to walk down an empty road with no lights alone (which there are not many in CT)? well if you have answered yes to these, you could possibly get robbed etc, but give me one place in the world where this would not happen- exactly, you cant.
We hosting the FIFA 2010 World Cup, one of the biggest sporting spectaculars in the world; If SA was so bad, why would we have been selected to host? why would the online ticketing service for the 2010 WC crash for the first time in FIFA history, the day it became accessible?
TRUTH is, is that SA is not half as bad as people think. We are Africa's leading nation, Cape Town voted in the "2008,2009 Top City's list" So what should you expect? the same things that i have heard endless times by tourists, that SA and CT is nothing like what they had read about, that they enjoyed their stay, and according to a statistic 82% of visitors to the Cape said they would return, 10% said they would not visit again, and the 8% said they were not sure.

Good Luck with your decision :)

hi,im a female planning to go and study in south africa.any advice?

We Answered:

The University of Cape Town is friendly and well-respected internationally (more so than its neighbour UWC). I'd recommend staying in an official residence when you first arrive, because you won't yet know which areas are safe (I have friends who are students staying in Woodstock, but certain areas there are dangerous). Also in the Cape is the University of Stellenbosch, which is in a small wine-farming town surrounded by mountains. It's very safe (as long as you live in an area called the Green Route), but a lot sleepier and more conservative than Cape Town. It's also less racially integrated. Wits (in Johannesburg) is also very well-respected overseas, with quite a few A-rated scientists. Joburg is more dangerous though, and the lifestyle is a lot faster. But the international students' residence is on campus and is lovely, so you wouldn't have to worry about safety at home. I like it: it feels more connected to what's actually going on in the country - but it depends what kind of experience you want.

Here's a link to some advice I gave another student about UCT:

Penny Said:

Do I need a study visa to south africa if I am doing online classes through a USA university?

We Answered:

A visa is used to gain permission to enter a country. If you are doing online classes, then there is no need to gain admission into a country, since you can do those classes from your home country. That is the purpose of online classes.

Discuss It!
