Lydia Said:

what course to study at university -UK, to be a fully qualified lawyer?

We Answered:

Hi

Thanks for your question.

The simple answer is that you can study any subject you like at university but this would be followed by a law conversion course at postgraduate level.

Please note that it depends how you want to train; as a barrister or solicitor. Here I discuss, briefly, how to become a solicitor.

Once you complete the conversion course you would go onto study the vocational programme; which teaches you the practical aspects of what a lawyer does.

It is also possible to study Law at university if you wish, but this will still require further training to be able to practice Law in the UK. If you do, there are some institutions that require the LNAT test.

Remember that there is no best answer as it very much depends on your situation. My suggestion is go with a degree that you believe that you would enjoy the most. Remember that undergraduate programmes are three years long so you want to be sure that you will see it through to the end. Law is a competitive subject but then again which profession isn’t these days! So be prepared to work hard.

Alfredo Said:

Should I study in a UK University or a US College?

We Answered:

Neil C. is correct. I can tell you that both Bryn Mawr and Reed have excellent reputations in the U.S.; I can't tell you anything about the University of Newcastle, despite having spent a fair amount of time living in and visiting the U.K. That doesn't mean that it is a bad school; I would guess that my counterpart in the U.K. would say the same about Bryn Mawr or Reed. None of them is Harvard or Oxford, so they don't have the kind of international reputations which would serve you well were you to move to another country after graduation. Therefore, I would advise going to a school in the country where you intend to make your life in the long run.
