Frank Said:

is it best to take notes while reading a college textbook?

We Answered:

Take notes, yes this helps to reinforce the concept that you've learnt and also, it forces you to re-word it so that you actually understand it and not because you memorized it. In addition, this means that should you find yourself out of time till the next exam, you could simply whip out your own notes and study them.

Also, draw pictures, employ the use of analogy if it aids in understanding the said material. I did it for my sci textbook and it helps.
Highlighter and color pencil are also there to help draw your attention to any important points.

Lastly, if you don't really know what's going on, there's youtube videos or you could ask your teacher.

Taken AP Bio: what did you do to score a 4 or 5?

We Answered:

I scored a 5 on the AP test.

Throughout the semester, I read the entire textbook (Campbell & Reece Biology text). I made 'concept maps' to connect the terms together. Make sure that you are making the connections mentally as well as on the paper-- be in study mode! (That means no tv, radio, etc.)

I would recommend doing practice tests--AP teachers are able to access these. I know my teacher used old AP essay questions on our tests. Ask your teacher if she has any extra ones you can use to study.

When you take the test, write EVERYTHING that you know about the topics for the essays. The way the essays are scored, you want to make sure you mention everything on the list of 'correct answers'.

For any sort of process you have to learn (metabolic pathways, life cycles, etc), I drew these out and thought about the major steps at each point. I'm a very visual learner and can learn by handwriting the information.

I would start studying now. Start reviewing the early material because you've probably forgotten more than you realize.

Good luck!
