Study Skills Class

Hugh Said:

Study skills: class note taking?

We Answered:

Are you using abbreviations?

A lot of people are afraid to use abbreviations, shorthand, etc. because they worry they will forget what they meant by it later on. Yet it is important to keep up with the lecture, because when you find yourself playing catch up on a previous statement, you often miss the next one entirely.

Abbreviate all you can, noting down the important details. If the teacher quotes a famous person, write down just the person's name and the first few words of the quote... you can look it up on the internet later.

If you're truly worried about things not being fresh in your mind, later in the week you can type up your notes while the class is still fresh in your mind, writing out the words completely (and even putting them into complete sentences if that's what you prefer).

You could also invest in a small, handheld, digital recorder if you are really having difficulties. That way you can play back the lecture later and fill in any bits you may have missed the first time around. You may want to ask your professor if he or she is okay with this, but in my experience they will rarely refuse.

Hope this helps!

We Answered:

What about the inverted pyramid method for studying? You start with all of the information, then take out the unnecessary information, then gradually make it briefer.
Note organization is important.
