How would you test the hypothesis that infants who listen to classical music develop better math skills?

We Answered:

Monitor several groups of babies. One group (the constant) will contain babies that don't listen to any music. The another group will contain babies that listen to classical music. There could be other groups for each genre of music. (This depends on whether you are testing whether classical music is better than no music or better than other genres of music for development of math skills.) Give these infants periodic simple math tests. The independent variable is what music (if any) the child listened to. The dependent variable is the infants' math ability.

Rhonda Said:

two junior or Senior engineering majors answer me please.?

We Answered:

1) High school - no studing required for A's. Most if not all of your HW could be finished at lunch. Concepts were mostly basic, and a lot of time was spent learning, going over, and practicing these concepts IN SCHOOL.
Engineering study - Amount of work is proportional to grade. A single HW assignment could take hours. Concepts start out basic and build up in complexity. All time spent practicing and going over material is done OUT OF CLASS. Teachers present material, with a few examples, then assign HW. If you have problems with it, its your responsibility to go seek them out in their office for help.

2) Not all HW is graded, but all HW must be done. In high school, you could do a handful of practice problems and be ready for a test. A test in engineering school requires hours of study spread out over a couple of days before the test if you want really good grades. Also, back to seeking out your teachers - you don't have to do this in high school. In college office hours are the key to getting good grades.

3) Work first, play later. If something needs done, you must not put it off, even for a few hours. This habit will always come back and bite you. Work first, get finished, and then relax in the remaining time. Also, don't spend excessive time traveling. If you've got an hour between classes, don't go home or back to the dorm, take materials with you and spend that hour in an empty classroom or lobby working on HW, this will save you time later!

4) Group study = necessary! Having a support group will greatly reduce the time needed for your HW. A group increases the chances that someone will have gotten something that you may have missed, and allows you less trips to office hours because only a couple of the group need to go with all of the group's questions. It also give you people to help you check your HW and results to practice problems when studying for tests. It gives you familiar faces at the beginning of each semester in a new course. And it gives you someone to complain to who understands what you're going through when it gets tough (if your parents are non-technical, they won't get it).

Engineering is an excellent major. If you start there and don't like it, the credits you have earned in your first semesters in math and science are equal or better to what you need for most other majors and will transfer. For those with problem-solving type minds, it is a fun and interesting career to head into.

Artistic_desires - not too many schools call it industrial and systems engineering, are you a Hokie too? If so, I won't rip on you for choosing that major, but if not...
