Test Study Tips

Mathew Said:

What are some good tips to study for a vocabulary test if you are a visual learner?

We Answered:

I agree that making good old traditional flashcards of your vocab words is a great idea. Also, try drawing symbols and pictures on the cards to facilitate memorization. This is a good strategy for all kinds of learners---think of a situation, an object, a facial expression---whatever comes to mind when you think about the word and its definition.

Use highlighters to stress key words and pictures on the flashcards. But be sure to limit the amount of information per card, so your mind can take a mental "picture' of the information.

In general when you're studying, try to outline much as possible, and translate words and ideas into symbols, pictures, and diagrams. Good luck!

What are the best-not cliche- study for test tips?

We Answered:

The people above me have given you really strange tips.

You study hard, but you don't get want you expect in tests, right? It used to happen to me too. Studying hard is not enough. Don't just take notes and rote memorize all the material, because honestly it doesn't help. What you need to do is past papers (if you could just ask your teacher or check out library books) and do lots of it on the topics being tested.

Also, you might not be answering the questions as required.
Again, go to the library and look through the books on exam/testing tips (books on answering exam/test questions), and use those that most appeal to you. Getting it right comes with trial and error, so don't be discouraged if you don't succeed the first time. Best of luck =)

What are some study tips and test taking tips for Pathophysiology & Pharmacology? nursing school?

We Answered:

Make flash cards with your meds and the basics that you can find in a drug book, like it's main uses, main side effects, nursing assessments that you need to be mindful of (if you give an anti-hypertensive medication to a patient what should you be checking?), and potential interactions.

Pathophysiology was probably the hardest course I remember taking in nursing school. My only advice for that is just keep reading and re-reading the text and use the end of chapter summaries. And ask questions if there is something you're not understanding, use your instructors as a resource outside of class. Email them, or stop by to visit with them during office hours. Often they might unintentionally (or perhaps intentionally) let slip areas to focus on for the test, give away answers, etc.

When taking tests, the basic rules always apply. Take your time to read the questions and all answer options carefully. Pay close attention to words like never, always, all, none, should/should not, as those can clue you in on the correct answer. When in doubt, follow your ABCs, airway, breathing, circulation. Always remember that patient safety is the highest consideration, and pain is lower in priority because it's a psycho-social problem, not an immediate physical threat.

Best of luck!

POLL: How do you study for a test? What tips do you have for others?

We Answered:

I always keep flashcards, re-read the chapter or whatever we learned, look over notes (or rewrite notes for it to sink in). DO NOT cram in a day, study throughout the week, start the day you found out you're having a test. For math, I look up videos to help tutor me and do a lot of practice problems.
