I think a college student could benefit from a project management class. I often have young college grads with one or two degrees come up and say to me they wish they had had this course in college. The one comment I say to them is that often in the academic world some of what we teach may not be as practical because everything is expected to be perfect in the academic world and in the real world, that just isn't the case. The people skills needed for project leadership are very diverse. And the world of managing people is gray, not black and white. I was where you were, once upon a time during my college years. Some of the part time jobs that you can do; working retail, working in your alumni relations office tracking past gradutes of the college, working for a security firm.

Don't knock sweeping and mopping. To this day, and I have had several successful careers, I still sweep a mean floor, can make a great cup of coffee, and can handle and unjam most copiers...no matter how fancy they may be.

My young friend, you are building a track record of success with every job that you do. Yes, you did act in haste by quitting your job. Everyone does that once in their career path. Some folks are just jerks and you can't live with them or work with them. But, you will see jerks going up the ladder of success, and certainly coming back down.

In case you didn't know, you go to work to WORK and get PAID. IF you find a friend, by all means celebrate the friendship. BUT, folk are a curious lot. Some hate college students, some are jealous of them, and some are just plain ignorant, because they have chosen to remain stuck in their place and have not decided to move on to something better.

So, they take it out on you.

When I graduated college...I mean the day after I got the degree, I returned BACK to my part time job as a dishwasher, which I worked a few more weeks. Talk about a letdown. However, it was a skill that gave me some insight...and a lot of great inside information as to how a restaurant works. If you want to be a writer or author, you need to have that 'varied' background. If you want to go into a job where you meet the public, you have to understand who the public is.

Everyone starts out working 'the crap jobs'. But, you don't have to stay in them!

True story. I was working a crap job when an old college buddy happened by my store. Turns out that, while we were friends in college, he decided to go the restaurant path and worked his way up to reigional manager of the chain where I was working. Guess who got promoted into management training the next day?

God does work; just trust him and let him lead. Life is too short to worry about what others think about what you do. Folk may not like the smell of the garbage man; but they thank God for him when he picks up those cans every week!
