Work Study Techniques

Bradley Said:

what studying techniques work best for you?

We Answered:

make up tests for yourself that test ALL the information, so that you can see what you know and what you don't. for vocab, flash cards are perfect. a couple of hours later, test yourself again. I repeat the answers out loud to myself and try to visualize the answers as well. If it helps also write out the answers once or twice on scratch paper.

If you test yourself until you know the answers even a few hours afterwards, then you probably will do just fine on the real test... since you've basically already taken it.

I'm going to assume you mean college study habits, this being the higher education section. There are a lot of things that really help me to study and therefore do better on tests, leading to good marks.

1. Actually use your textbook. A lot of teachers will assign reading for a class, but then go everything in class. This doesn't mean you shouldn't still read the textbook, or do the practice problems (if applicable) since many textbooks reiterate what was gone over in class, or explain it in a different way to help you better understand a concept. If you have this kind of resource, use it, because it really does help you have things explained a few different ways, allowing you to apply the concept to different situations.
2. Read the textbook before the lecture. You may not understand the textbook right away if you haven't yet had the lecture. However, I've found that reading the book before the lecture helps me better understand the lecture and gain a stronger grasp on whatever concept is being presented.
3. Take notes on the textbook. This is repetitive, but it helps to ingrain an idea or concept into your brain.
4. Take good class notes. If you don't pay attention in class, you won't be able to go back and review what was presented, so be sure to pay attention, and take good notes. Good notes usually include whatever a professor writes down or repeats (these are good indicators), as well as additional information to main concepts that will help you to understand it when you review it.
5. Review your notes after the lecture, and maybe even look at them again right before the next lecture to refamiliarize yourself with previous material.
6. Group study. The best way to really learn something is to teach it to someone else. It goes both ways, too, so if you didn't understand something, someone else can maybe explain it to you in a different way so that you do understand.
7. Do the homework. It can be annoying, but homework is usually assigned for a reason - to help you learn. Take it seriously. Otherwise, when the exam rolls around, you won't know what you're doing.
8. Attend class and take time to study outside of class. These are the obvious ones that so many people neglect. Oversleeping may seem tempting, and maybe that party sounds really fun, but going to class and actually studying will help your grades more than anything.

These are just a few of many that I've found to work for me. I hope these help you, and good luck!

Which study techniques work best for you?

We Answered:

Someone mentioned note (index) cards, and I found them very helpful as well. Making up practice tests in the same format as the instructor (multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank and/or short essay) also helps and can show where one needs to study more. Study groups can be very helpful too. Keep reading class notes and the required chapters. Take short breaks and offer oneself a reward for studying such as purchasing a book or going to a movie.
