Best Practices In Teaching

Sandra Said:

What are the best practices to prevent getting rear ended on your motorcycle?

We Answered:

Give yourself plenty of room, ride in open lanes instead of boxing yourself in, make sure your tail and brake lights are working, do a walk around and check all your lights, tap the brakes a few times before you stop to alert drivers to the rear you are coming to a stop, check your mirrors constantly.

What is the best way to teach?

We Answered:

You must remember that you are not teaching a group but rather you are teaching individuals. Perhaps overall group work may be best for the group, but that does not mean that it is best for every individual in the class.
Try to use each of the techniques that you mentioned. This will help to reach all learning styles and this way everyone can benefit. It also makes for an interesting class that keeps kids interested and always moving. Let's face it; no one wants to listen to an hour of lecturing. And imagine if every teacher did that every period of your day! I would not be paying attention for long and most kids would be phasing in and out.
Mix it up and you will be doing the best you can for your kids. One of the keys is to use different techniques for the same topic. This way everyone will walk away having been reached. Do not do just lecture for chapter 1 and then group work for 2... Explain something and then do partner activities and individual practice and group work, etc.

Bill Said:

Is there a site where can I announce my new book on college Teaching so that many teachers can benefit?

We Answered:

If the book has been published by a publisher he will do the advertising and publicity. If you have published on your own, even then get in touch with some publishers who will canvass for your book on the basis of some commission.Put an ad in the newspaper.Lastly give it to Amazon.com They might do the selling for you. They will tell you their terms and conditions.

Instructors - Newsletters, Magazines on Best Practices?

We Answered:

Practices always give good ideas!!

Ken Said:

Do you believe there is a universal best teaching practice?

We Answered:

Bless you. The question that freezes the heart of every teaching workshop presenter you've ever seen.

No--no such thing. As long as teachers have their individual strengths and weaknesses as well as students, there cannot be all the time. There, are however, certain practices that seem generally more effective than others statistically. Teacher-student interaction always works better than ignoring them completely (duh!). I personally think projects are the ideal way of assessing competence--but not for certain children. Some peoples' styles just don't work with certain things. Studnets' learning styles differ, as do teachers' comfort with teaching styles.

I really dislike all these broad assumptions that presume there is a quick fix to our schools.
