California Teaching Credential

Melvin Said:

I have a California teaching credential. I want to know will it work in Canada?

We Answered:

There are 49 other states that will not accept a California certificate without additional classes. Yet you expect a foreign country to do so. I assume you have been in public schools. If you want a leg up in Canada, start on Spanish classes.

Larry Said:

What's the easiest way to use an Oregon teaching license to get a California Credential?

We Answered:

I looked in the California Code
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displa…

Do a find for:
44274.2

It says that you will be given an initial 5 year license if you have met equivalent teaching standards in that other state. That have reciprocity arrangements.

Tony Said:

What other states accept a California Teaching Credential?

We Answered:

I know several people who took their clear California Teaching Credential and went to other states. All they had to do in most cases was take a state history class.

It's the opposite that's hard: teachers transferring to California have a difficult time getting a cleared credential.

Andy Said:

How do I get my California teaching credential updated?

We Answered:

If I were you, I would probably renew it now. You never know what new requirements California may come up with in 5 years so it may be harder to renew later without having to take extra tests. You can renew your credential online by going to www.ctc.ca.gov and click the link that says renew credential. Hope this helps :)

How difficult is it to transfer a New York State teaching credential to a California teaching credential?

We Answered:

Yes. I did it. If I were you I'd get the degree from NYU (great school) and do the credential in CA.
It will take about a year to transfer anyway. New York has reciprocity with CA, but all that means is that you don't have to do student teaching again. I spent a year taking Praxis tests to get my credentials "Californicated" (Pardon the language but you'll find it a very frustrating experience. I had credentials from two states and 2 MA's and it still took a year) CA requires a 5th year after the BA
to get a credential anyway, so if you can, move back and do the credential here. You'll avoid SOOO many hassles. Most state colleges offer very good programs.
