Careers In Teaching

Lucy Said:

Ideas on non-teaching careers in education?

We Answered:

Hi Graciemo,

You might consider becoming involved in coordinating vocational education programs working for Universities, Schools or with a Department of Corrections facility.

There may be educational administrative positions with any of the above. Possibility of research positions perhaps.

Something to think about perhaps. Best approach in my opinion is to target any of the above organizations by way of speculative letters; attach your resume and the really good news is that you will have no competitors unless someone as smart as yourself has the same idea.

Hope this helps and best wishes.

What sort of (non-teaching) careers are there in the field of linguistics?

We Answered:

I like Overheardinohio's answer. She is right. Anyone who is bilingual can get a Translation/Interpretation Certification without going to college. Linguistics is not knowing how to speak another language. Linguistics is a research science. Your career can be in research and in writing so that instructors are using your sourcework for teaching. You can research speech acquisition and pathology to develop ways to teach brain-injured people to talk again. Study phonetics and phonology with a focus on American English to develop better ways to teach kids here to read. Study the implications of the morphology and syntax of various languages on their respective cultures. (Is a society that only has one word for "love" less loving that a society that has thirteen different words to express different kinds of "love"). Study cross-cultural communication to help the world understand each other better as we become more and more globalized. You could start your own business contracting out consultants to teach the Diversity Workshops that alll companies seem to have these days. So many possibilities......

CA teachers and educators. What does the future look like for teaching careers in public schools? ?

We Answered:

I'm not a teacher yet, but I asked this same question a few weeks ago both here and in orientation programs. I didn't want to spend time and money then end up unemployed!

What I learned is:
if you teach science or math you have nothing to worry about
if you teach English or social studies, you will have trouble
if you are getting a multiple subject credential to teach elementary, you don't stand much of a chance
forget going straight into a wonderful, upscale school system
willingness to teach in a low ranked, inner city school is nearly a guarantee that you will find a position

What are some careers beyond teaching that I can pursue with a BA in sociology?

We Answered:

Below I attached two web links that will help you in finding some career paths for individuals with Sociology degrees.

In all reality there are a lot more jobs out there that you can go after by just having any bachelor degree. Furthermore, most people that have a Bachelor degree do not work in their field of study. There are a lot of jobs that will not consider you without a 4-year degree and will accept any degree.

Larry Said:

Will teaching careers get easier to find?

We Answered:

When I was in college in the mid 1990's someone from the teaching department told us that in 5 years there would be a demand for teachers. He then told us that he had been hearing the same thing for 20 years. It's now been 15 years and while it's possible to find jobs they still are certainly not abundant. Good news though. I've heard that in 5 years there will be a demand for teachers.
