English Teaching Methods

Yolanda Said:

Which are the best methods for teaching English as a second language?

We Answered:

There are several schools in Mexico that teach English. Please expand your question as we are not sure if you are referencing an ESL/TOEFL style school, an international school based on curricula of the United States, Canadian, or British model, or a private school under the guidelines of the government of Mexico that offers English, as in a trade or secretarial school.

Personally, I worked as an overseas administrator and would be willing to provide some guidance if you are seeking a United States model certified by the SACS, WACS, etc. Please e-mail me if you are interested.

Look forward to seeing the actual question expressed where the community can assist ...

Please tell me what your methods are for teaching structured English conversation to foreign learners.?

We Answered:

It often helps to learn songs together. You would be amazed at how singing helps to develop proper accents and phrasing. Another other extremely helpful method is to make the learning experience complimentary. If you show an interest in the learner's language and culture, they are much more likely to prioritize learning your language.

It also helps to identify what the student's immediate needs are. Many language methods teach ancillary information that while ultimately helpful, has little relevance to the student's daily life or expectations.

Finally, make the learning experience as structured as possible. Start with concrete examples and avoid words that have several pronunciations and meanings. (Read is an excellent example) DVDs and television shows with subtitles are an excellent resource, as are flashcards. As the student progresses, they can literally see the pile of words build up in the pile, and it is very easy to build sentences with several flashcards. (Sometimes you have to include more than one flashcard of the same word in order for this to be completely effective)

What are the best methods for teaching English as a foreign language; preferably dynamic, direct methods?

We Answered:

Hi There
Without knowing much about you and what qualifications you have a good start would be to read 'The Practice of English Language Teaching' by Jeremy Harmer. If you get the 4th edition with the CD you will see various approaches by experienced teachers.
Above all try to make the learning fun and interactive allow time for them to practise the new language taught and plenty of visual aids. Use video bring in other english speakers for them to interview.
I have included my website where you will find links to various websites. I also invite you to contact me through my website for other materials that are freely available on the net.

Which are the best acive methods of teaching english as a foreign language?

We Answered:

You need to start with the simple stuff. Start off by making sure that they know the english alphabet and can pronounce each of the letters individually. You then need to move onto getting them to read simple sentences, and to make sure that they are sounding out the words correctly. Move on to slightly more difficult sentences and ensure that you include words that are spelt one way but have a different sounds, such as 'ph' sounding like 'f'.

What methods are best for teaching English to 4 and 5 year olds?

We Answered:

Lots of repetition, songs and games. When you set up play groups, mix the kids up so that they aren't with others having the same native language.

What are the new trends of teaching english language ? or in methods of teaching English?

We Answered:

In the new trends these days I have seen lots of English Teachers trying to make the class more interactive. By having in class quizzes, reading, group and individual presentations on a topic followed by questions and answers. In the end one should try to find out where exactly the students are lacking and how to make the class more involved in what is being taught.
