ESL teaching jobs in Korea? We Answered:
The salary may be low, but with a free apartment, I'm sure you'll be doing fine. I'd kill to have a 2.1 million won salary right now!The school saying that you have "ample tutoring opportunities" is misleading because tutoring is illegal for most foreigners. Only Korean-Americans with F-4 visas and the spouses of Koreans on F-2 visas, or permanent residents with F-5 visas can tutor.
An entry-level teacher, given the poor exchange rate of the won (currently in the 1200s, but some analysts say it could test 2,000 this year), should be making about 2.3 or 2.4 million won AFTER the apartment. It depends on your qualifications. Obviously if you have a TEFL certificate like CELTA, you should be making 100,000 or 200,000 more per month. If you have a master's degree or an education degree, you should be making more, as well.
I agree with your statement about wanting to teach kids over 14. Here is my opinion on each age group, having taught almost all of them:
Extremely Young Learners: Don't do it unless the pay is good. They will resist tooth-and-nail. Korean culture tends to avoid any sort of discipline until a child turns seven, so these kids know no bounds!
Kindergarteners, Pre-schoolers, and First Graders: They tend to be so awestruck that they behave better than the older kids. English is a new experience for them and they're still intrigued. However, their English is basically non-existant.
Second Graders, Third Graders, and Fourth Graders: This age group is hell compared to the other ones. They are disrespectful, don't pay attention at all, think you're a dumb white ape, insult you to your face, etc. Stay away from this age group at all costs!
Fifth Graders and Sixth Graders: They are a lot of fun because they are starting to speak conversational English, and there isn't yet the social pressure that there will be in middle school to be quiet and not show off. So the kids make up all kinds of hilarious stories and are a joy to teach.
Middle Schoolers: They are fairly well behaved but very quiet, because they don't want to look like they're showing off. This might get infuriating.
High Schoolers: They are similarly quiet to middle schoolers, but not quite as bad. They are basically learning on an adult level, so you can have interesting discussions with them.
Adults: They are very respectful and active and fun to teach, but the trouble is that you have to worry about them analyzing your teaching approach and thinking your'e incompetent. So you'd better be competent! Otherwise, though, they are a joy. I especially love tutoring flight attendants.

ESL teaching jobs in Montreal? We Answered:
All the best but the market is very limited. If you can get into a school system (you must have a Bachelor's degree in Education) maybe. Or there might be a lot of volunteer positions available.Regina Said:
I've just been offered two ESL teaching jobs, which one do I pick?We Answered:
The second one sounds like a better bet - even if you have to wear a tie. Yes, it may denote control issues, but it also means the students will have to conform to standards as well. The first school doesn't sound like a winner at all - one of these days, they'll send in a new broom and the whole thing will be redone and you may not like someone tromping on your turf.Brandon Said:
ESL teaching jobs available in the US?We Answered:
Contact local hospitals and businesses with a large number of employees. They may be willing to negotiate something with you. You may also want to offer spanish classes to these types of establishments as well. Try hospitals first. :)Betty Said:
Going to Korea with AF husband- ESL teaching jobs off base?We Answered:
The easiest thing would be to come here with your husband and, after arrival, email your resume around. Once hired, the employer will determine whether your SOFA visa will be sufficient to work with. If it isn't, it's a simple matter of flying to Osaka for the visa. Most decent employers will pay for the Osaka flight. If a prospective employer tries to make you pay for the Osaka trip yourself, then keep looking. There are lots of jobs teaching English in Korea, so don't worry - shouldn't be any problem at all.
