Fast Track Teaching
Mark Said:
Why are unemployed bankers given fast track training to teach in schools? We Answered:
because the most memorable teachers are the bitter ones who were destined for greater things but got bogged down in money issuesBill Said:
fast track to teaching: Parents and teachers what do you think? We Answered:
This is worrying to think that someone can totally switch careers and end up in a classroom after 6 months. teachers are a very special breed and it takes a special sort of person to be a good one. i think we may see the consequences of this new idea in years to comesaying that, i think there are many ppl in the system that this would suit. and by that i mean ppl that are already in the education system. like classroom assistants and child care workers. but even then its a few that are suitable to obtain full teacher status and i think its up to heads of schools to put these ppl forward and state reasons why. not everyone shud just be able to gain this qualification.
my daughter is one of the ones who is in her third yr at uni. studying hard. broke. it is a bit of a slap in face for the hardworking students

teaching - fast track - how and what!?We Answered:
No fast track it takes 2 years to be a QTLS starting on City and Guilds 7303 then 7304 and finally 7305On 01 September 2007 the Government implemented the new Further Education Workforce Reforms.
Those teaching in Further Education (FE) colleges and LSC funded providers must now gain professional status appropriate to their job role.
Why were the reforms introduced?
The Government’s plans for the UK to remain a driving force in the global economy is to be built around the development of the nation’s skills, as was highlighted in the FE white paper Raising Skills, improving life chances 2006. It was felt that change was needed in order to raise the skills of the five million+ people a year who will be educated through the further education system; this would ensure that all learners are taught by professional and highly skilled practitioners.
The reforms will give teachers in the Lifelong Learning workforce the professional recognition they deserve.
Who do the reforms apply to?
The reforms apply to all teachers, trainers, tutors, lecturers and instructors in the life long learning sector who deliver LSC funded training and qualifications.
The statutory regulations require appropriate professional status for those who teach in the following types of organisation:
FE colleges
Sixth Form colleges
Specialist colleges
Those who teach in the following types of organisation will be required to hold the appropriate professional status because the awarding of LSC funding contracts depends on it:
Work based learning (WBL)
LSC funded Voluntary and Community based learning
Armed forces learning
ALL OTHER LSC FUNDED LEARNING
Those exclusively in non-teaching roles or teacher related roles, such as Assessors, Verifiers and Learning support practitioners are not currently considered to be teachers.
The requirements for gaining professional status differ depending on when teachers joined the workforce. For full details of the development and introduction of the Government reforms by the Department for Innovation Universities and Skills (DIUS) and Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK), please visit www.lluk.org/ittreforms.
Professional status: what are the differences between the Associate Teacher role (ATLS) and the Full Teacher role (QTLS)?
ATLS Status
Those deemed to be Associate Teachers must obtain Associate Teacher Learning and Skills (ATLS) status. An Associate Teacher is someone who carries out fewer responsibilities than someone in a full teaching role. This is regardless of whether their contract is full-time, part-time, fractional, or fixed term. An Associate Teacher is not required to demonstrate an extensive range of knowledge, understanding and application of curriculum development. The City & Guilds 7304 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) is the required qualification for those aiming to achieve ATLS status with the IfL.
QTLS Status
Teachers deemed to be in a Full Teacher role must work towards Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. Someone in a Full Teacher role (whether full-time, part-time, or in a temporary or permanent contract) is required to demonstrate an extensive range of knowledge, understanding and application of curriculum development. The City & Guilds 7305 Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) is the required qualification for those aiming to achieve QTLS status with the IfL.
Institute for Learning (IfL) - guidelines for teachers
The IfL is the professional body for teachers, trainers, tutors and student teachers in the learning and skills sector.
If you started teaching in the sector before September 2001:
Under the 2007 Regulations, you are required to register with the Institute for Learning for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) purposes. They are not required by the regulations to gain any additional qualifications or to become a Licensed Practitioner. However, as some employers will expect and encourage such development as it becomes the benchmark for the sector, you are encouraged to become a Licensed Practitioner by completing the professional formation assessment. See http://www.ifl.ac.uk/ for further information.
If you started teaching in the sector between September 2001 and August 2007:
If you teach in an Associate Teach role, you remain exempt from the teacher qualification regulations, so do not have to gain further qualifications to comply. You are however encouraged to gain professional status (QTLS).
If you teach in a Full Teaching Role and are you qualified under the 2001 regulations (England), you remain sufficiently qualified, so do not have to gain further qualifications to comply with regulations. You are however encouraged to gain professional status (QTLS/ATLS). You can do this through gaining recognition of prior experience and qualifications as equivalent to being part or fully qualified, i.e. though APL, Tariff database of Legacy Qualifications (TLQ), Professional Recognition. This should be supplemented by top-up CPD, if required to gain equivalence to being fully qualified.
If you enrolled on an ITT course beginning before 01/9/2007 and you can complete it before 01/9/2008, then you are entitled to complete the remainder of you qualification in accordance with the 2001 regulations. QTLS status is not required although it is encouraged
If you started teaching from September 2007:
Under the 2007 Regulations, as a newly qualified teacher you will need to register with the Institute for Learning in order become a Registered Teacher. You will then be required to become a appropriately qualified by completing the 7304 CTLLS Certificate or 7305 DTLLS Diploma (depending on your teaching role). You are then required to undergo professional formation in order to become a Licensed Practitioner.
Under the 2007 Regulations, as a newly qualified teacher you will need to register with the Institute for Learning in order become a Registered Teacher.
£30 million pounds of additional government funding
The Government has pledged to invest £30 million in 2007 / 2008 to support initial teacher training, in addition to the existing Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Learning and Skills Council (LSC) funding.
Funds were expected to be available from the end of October. The Department for Innovation Universities and Skills (DIUS) and the LSC are finalising arrangements for paying this ‘additional’ money to providers. The funding will relate to your overall LSC funding provision. The Quality Improvement Agency (QIA) will be advising on the potential areas that the money should be deployed in.
Any questions centres may have relating to additional funding and payment, in advance of confirmation of arrangements by their local LSC and the QIA, may contact the DIUS Workforce Development and Leadership team in Improvement on 0114 259 1338. General funding enquiries should be made to your local LSC.

Learners who study for the DTLLS will be able to apply to their Local Authority (LA) for a mandatory maintenance grant.
