Games to aid teaching english...?We Answered:
Trivia............Quiz booksWhat are they really interested in? Aeroplanes, fashion, development of computers.............? Get them to do some research & make a booklet of what they find out, with pictures or drawings. The local British Council library would be helpful.

Can u give me some games for teaching english to make it more interesting? We Answered:
I teach Spanish and we work with a lot of vocabulary and also literature. If you have some hard words that the kids need to spell start the class with a "quickstart" vocabulary scramble. Put the kids in small groups and give them about 8 words all scrambled. The first 2 groups to unscramble the words win candy. You can take attendance while they do this.
Photocopy a simple board game. Type questions and cut them apart. Put the questions in envelopes. The kids can use coins or erasers for markers. They roll a die (buy at the dollar store) and pick a card. If they can answer the question (vocabulary or literature) then they move the spaces. If they cannot answer it then they either stay or have to move back that number of spaces.
Flyswatter game: Put all of your vocabulary and/or characters on the board in random order. Divide the class in 2 halves and 1 kid from each team comes up to the board. Say the definition or a trait of the character. The first kid to hit the answer with his flyswatter wins a point. State the rules; NO HITTING EACH OTHER!
At www.puzzlemaker.com you can create your own puzzles. I sometimes make crosswords with my specific vocabulary and/or literature as the clues. Word searches are also good but the hidden word is the vocabulary word and then I type a separate list that has the definitions. I tape the definitions to the word search and they have to figure out what the answer is in order to find the word.
Buy a basketball hoop at the dollar store. The kids (one from each team; usually 5) go to the board at once. State the question. The first student to answer it correctly gets a point and gets to take a shot. If they get the basket they get an extra point.

Please what type of game is good for a teacher of English to introduce himself to ESL?We Answered:
Actually Dear colleague, there is no best game alone. The best game depends greatly on the situation you are in and the audience you are addressing their ages, interests, cultural background. For example , you can use a small ball and throw it randomly and the one who holds it should say some thing about him/her self in the language they are learning if possible etc.

Does anyone know where you can buy games to help teach english as a foreign language? We Answered:
I'm an EFL teacher and I've never bought any games. I've found the most popular games (for 8-14 year olds) are Hangman, Noughts and Crosses (in each box, you put for example, a word and they have one minute to talk about that word. If they do it, they get a nought or cross in the box). That one is really popular. Another game is 'categories'. Each student draws a table on a piece of paper divided into 6 columns. Each column has a heading, ie. food, sport, capital cities, famous people etc. You then give them a letter and they have to think of a word beginning with that letter that fits into each categories. The student that finishes every category for that letter first gets 5 points. Each correct category gets 5 points. Similar to this is, get all the students standing up, give a category, ie. food. The first student thinks of food beginning with a, the next student a food beginning with b, the next c and so on until someone can't think of one. That person sits down. Change the category and start again. Last person standing is the winner.Another game is, divide the class into two teams. Pick one person from each team to sit in a chair with their backs to the whiteboard. Write a word on the board. The rest of the team have to explain the word to the person sitting down. The person in the chair who guesses correctly gets a point for their team. Similar to this is a drawing game. Again with the class in two teams, you write a word on a piece of paper and show it to one person from each team. They then run to board and draw the word. This can be really easy or difficult depending on the word you choose.
I just wouldn't buy loads of stuff to take with you. It will eat into your luggage allowance and I've been teaching for a few years and believe me, kids go nuts for these simple games. My only exception would be a box of Cuisinaire rods, maybe.
You can google 'efl teaching' and get loads of stuff, but for things like printed pictures you often have to pay. It's worth having a look though. Email me if you need more explanation of the games I've described.
