How Do I Become A Teaching Assistant

Beatrice Said:

How do you become a Teaching Assistant in Illinois?

We Answered:

Hi. There are a couple of ways to becoming a Paraprofessional (Teaching Assistant) in Illinois. First, go to the website down below. That is the Board/ Department of Education website and there should be some listing of jobs. Secondly, go to your local school (elementary, middle or high school) and ask the Principal's assistant on how you could apply for the job.

I believe your going to need:
college transcripts
letters of references
2 IDs
a letter stating that you got the job from the school

If you go into a local school as a volunteer and put some hours in you'll get more experience and often they'll snap you up as a TA. Speak to the head and say that you'd be willing to cover any TA absences and ask if they'll put you on the relief supply TA list. It will also look good on your PGCE application. Good luck.

How do you become a teaching assistant when you have no experience?

We Answered:

Do some voluntary work in schools? You'll need to be checked for security to make sure you're not a looney etc, but I'm sure some school would take you on as an unpaid assistant for a term or two to give you experience. Be up front, explain why you want to do it. Then apply for jobs (if you still like it) and ask this first school to give you a reference.

I know at private schools you don't need schooling. In public schools I don't know.

You can also do these internship-like programs in which you will work as a teacher's aid so you can train to be a teacher. You can also go to college while being a teacher's aid or a teacher. At private schools it is easier with getting hired.

A background check will be done on you and you will have your fingerprints taken, as well.

How would I become a Teaching Assistant?

We Answered:

Many community colleges have two year paraprofessional programs. It depends on the state you are in, if you would need that! In my state all new paras must have the para cert. and ones that having been working for awhile and do not have it, have a certain length of time to get it.

You can either look on various job websites and your local council website is a good place to start. Pop in to local schools and ask if there are any opportunities; even voluntary work can set the ball rolling. However, if you wish to do this full time you will need a degree in the area you wish to teach.
