Online Teaching Credential

Grace Said:

Question about renewing a single subject teaching credential in California?

We Answered:

I was under the impression that going through the BTSA program was all you needed to do to get the Professional Clear, thus renewing your credential. I refused to do BTSA so I am doing a 5th year program that will cover it. After that first renewal/clear then you need to start keeping track of the hours. Its all confusing so don't take my thoughts as gospel.

California teaching credential question?

We Answered:

You don't have to show proof of your PD unless you're audited. So far, I've heard of no one being audited, but it's good idea to keep those PD hours logged and available for evidence in case they actually decide to check things out.

What is a good online school for getting my California teaching credential?

We Answered:

I did WGU (wgu.edu) and loved it. I was able to complete quickly.

You did not say BA or MA. WGU (as far as I know) is the only accredited online BA program. There are several that are okay for MA programs.

If you do not do an accredited school NCATE is the best. But regional accreditation is also good.

Teaching Credential - Does it matter where?

We Answered:

Pose this question to teachers in your local area who work (or roughly work in) the area you wish to pursue. There is a very well-known college in my state that puts out horrible teachers and the principals know it. They would rather hire someone from a lesser known college than the "big" one. Look into on-line programs or parts of it through the brick and mortar colleges. I'm pursuing a second degree and love the flexibility of taking on-line courses. I can handle more coursework while working full-time.
