What are the alternative routes to teaching certification?

We Answered:

Check your state board of education website for which alternative certification programs your state approves.

Here's the link: http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/ser…

I didn't really have time to read through it, but you should definitely have a good chance looking for alternative certification as a science teacher.

The previous poster is correct to an extent. There are required education classes that you need to be certified. However, these do not need to be earned before you start teaching, if you are enrolled in an alternative program. If accepted, you will normally start teaching immediately on an alternative certification and earn your alternative initial certification and often Masters while you work.

Good luck.

Contact the State Department of Education for any state you wish to become employed.
With the help of e-mail, this shouldn't be too difficult.

Good luck.

How long does it take to receive certification?

We Answered:

Schools will typically give a letter of eligibility to teach. All this letter says is that you have graduated and submitted all of your paperwork to the state it's just that you are waiting for your actual certificate. This way you can still apply for positions (but you will need to send them a copy of your certification when you get it). The link below will take you to PA's department of education and will answer more questions you may have about certification.

I am not really sure how long it may take to get your actual certificate You can always call the department of ed. to find out.

Advice on teaching in PA? Education/certification, etc.?

We Answered:

I live in Ohio, so I'm not sure how similar PA is. I suggest contacting your local college/university and setting up a meeting with someone in the education department. They will be able to tell you exactly what requirements you'll need and may even point you towards good online courses. With a Bachelor's degree you can sub in the schools. Look around for your local school websites and fill out a sub application. You can also teach in some private schools with a Bachelor's degree. I'm pretty sure you can't get a teaching position in a public school until you have your teaching license.. but like I said, you can sub and possibly even be a teacher aide.

Hope that helps!
