Joanne Said:

Does Canada recognise foreign teaching qualifications?

We Answered:

The provinces of Canada are still working on trying to recognize each others' teaching certificates, much less those of other countries. Believe it or not, teachers who move to other provinces often have to take additional coursework to be fully certified in their new home. Some provinces have worked out labour mobility agreements, but they're still a long way from being universal across the country.

Second, there isn't any shortage of teachers in Canada - in fact, there is a large surplus of them, especially in the larger city centres such as Toronto and Vancouver. There are many reasons for this - people having fewer kids, senior teachers working later, increased number of new graduates from university teacher education programs, government fiscal belt-tightening that increases class size and eliminates teacher support positions, etc... Some areas of Canada, such as the rural and remote areas, have more job openings, but this situation would be similar to that of Western Australia which I've often seen advertise abroad for teachers in the past.

What are the qualifications for teaching English in a Korean university?

We Answered:

Seoul National is the top university in Korea. That's like trying to get a job teaching at Harvard in the US. There's no way you will get a job there with only a Bachelor's Degree. You will need minimum of a Master's Degree in English or related field, five years teaching experience at the university level (preferably in Korea) and most importantly good Korean connections (cronyism still rules in Korea). I've seen lower tier universities and colleges offer positions in the English Department requiring a Bachelor's Degree and two to three years experience. There is no shortage of qualified applicants for university jobs....they're the best jobs in Korea.

With only a degree you can easily get a job in a hagwon or maybe a public school, but not a university.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Jeffrey Said:

I have no teaching qualifications, would anyone recommend a TEFL?

We Answered:

TEFL will only qualify you to teach English as a foreign language (not in schools, but to students/adults in language schools etc)..

You may find that Dubai schools will accept you as a school teacher without a formal teaching qualification, but many countries will not.

It would be better to do PGCE, if you anticipate teaching subjects other than English abroad.

However, to get full QTS status you will have to pass your NQT (newly-qualified teacher) year after your PGCE. There is a time-limit for this (5 years, I believe) and it is not possible to do it abroad (apart from in British Forces' schools). You might, therefore, consider TEFL for a short-term job abroad (although you will not get the same salary without a teaching qualification).

Lance Said:

Are the qualifications for teaching the same all over the US?

We Answered:

I have taught in three states and none were the same. I start out by contacting the dept of ed for that state. I then need to meet with the certification adviser at the college nearest my selected city. After review of my transcript and teaching certificates I can get a limited license which will last until the state certification agency goes over my transcript, prior teaching, etc. and decides what fields I should be licensed in.
