Social Studies Teaching Jobs

Claudia Said:

I am a teacher with a BS in Education (social studies). What jobs would I qualify for in navy or USAF OCS?

We Answered:

As a Marine I would suggest the Marines or Army, what ever your degree you can get a job because everything that you need to know will be taught to you. Army has more jobs available for some one entering who is non prior military. Marines normally go to OCS with some random degree in religion. Although in order to be selected by either Army or Marines you have to be physically fit and have a good looking resume and your ASVB has got to be high enough; dont worry though i got better then passing officer score and i was in highschool when i took the test.

Darlene Said:

Is teaching K-12 social studies a waste of a history degree?

We Answered:

Teaching is only a waste of your degree if you're not happy doing it. If you think it would make you happy, and you could get some sort of fulfillment out of passing on the knowledge to your students, then it doesn't matter what your past was. It's usually a misstep to try to think of the things you "should" be doing because you associate a particular past with a job. Instead, you should maybe think about why you studied history in the first place, and then think about if teaching would let you enjoy history the way you'd originally wanted to. If you'd be miserable teaching, then it would be a waste of time, both for you and the students, and a waste of life, but certainly not a waste of your degree.

Bobbie Said:

I want to be a Social Studies teacher. What should I minor in?

We Answered:

try political science, it will round out your learning,

Elaine Said:

If got a BA in Social or American Studies then got a MA in education, would that help looking for a job?

We Answered:

If I were in Administration (which I'm not) I would hire more students with a MAT, if they're out there. The teachers I've seen with a non-education BA, and a MAT for teacher certifications are often better than those of us who did it the other way. At 22, I was lost in the classroom.

Ralph Said:

What can I do to make myself the best candidate for a social studies teaching job?

We Answered:

Top of your class? Who cares....
Professional Organization? Who cares...
Technology Integration? I'll give you this one.

Try to get into a spot where you are directly responsible for children... Do you know of any sports you can coach? When you're a sub teacher you aren't directly responsible for the kids... you're just there to keep them in their cages and to report any bad behavior.
