Supply Teaching Pay

Jessie Said:

How does supply teaching work?

We Answered:

I'm guessing that supply teaching is like substitute teaching. In our school system and it could be different other places, you have to go to a 2-4 hour class on classroom management. After you do this you will be put on a call list. Go and visit the schools where you are willing to substitute. Meet with the teachers and let them know your qualifications. Otherwise you won't get very many calls.

As far as salary goes, it is usually by the day. For example a certified teacher might get $75 dollars a day and a non-certified teacher might get $55 dollars a day. You will have no pension as a substitute and no insurance benefits. Also experience makes no difference only teacher certification or not. It might actually help you to get a full time position if you have been substituting and have a good reputation with the school.

Good Luck in what ever you do.

Rita Said:

Teaching Assistants - Should they cover classes for no extra pay?

We Answered:

In all the schools that I have worked in, the teaching assistants do get paid if they are covering a class, even if it is just for one block (half an hour). It is a huge responsibility and they should definitely be rewarded.

Tom Said:

How much do you get paid for supply teaching per day (with Protocol)?

We Answered:

If you join the scheme "run" for your local LEA (or is that Protocol ?) it may be different.
If you go "direct" to a school, the school will "employ" you to do supply, they get to see you and vice versa,so if a maternity-leave job comes up,or similar. That way you earn more.

Freddie Said:

Are parents having to pay for teachers teaching supplies?

We Answered:

wow, ive never heard of that, why would a child need dry erase markers? i personally wouldnt buy them, i would buy the things that seemed necessary and if i missed something then i would buy it. but 2 boxes of crayons, that is rediculous, what do they think that parents grow money on trees? just buy what you think is necessary and leave all the other junk out. you shouldnt be providing the whole class with supplies, everyone should supply their own stuff.

Gina Said:

Supply teaching in the UK?

We Answered:

supply - hours can be inconsistent which but your bills tend to be regular;

You are treated like a supply teacher not a staff member

Some agencies allow a small percentage of sick pay

You have to find your own private pension

Remortgaging, getting a mortgage or other financial commitments can be tricky to arrange in this situation

Lack of stability

You will not always be needed

You may have to travel long distances

You are not always given appropriate instructions on what to teach in the syllabus due to lack of time

On the other hand, you don't have to complete half as much paperwork

Pay sounds okay per hour but think about what is subtracted from it

Permanent work is more secure

good luck
