Teach English In Brazil

Glen Said:

How to Teach English in Brazil?

We Answered:

In general you'll need a degree (although there are still possibilities if you do not have this) and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to get a visa and work.

The degree can be in pretty well any subject as it's usually needed to show you've received some decent education. It's better to have a language related degree if you can though, English being the obvious one!

The TEFL certificate can be taken either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option (see http://icalweb.com).

You don't need to know the local language to teach English, but it never hurts (especially outside the classroom) so a few Portuguese lessons wouldn't be a bad idea. And then after that it's just a matter of finding work - which isn't too difficult in Brazil if you've the right qualifications.

Alice Said:

Can I really make a decent living teaching English in Brazil?

We Answered:

Just to give you an example:
My wife taught English in Brazil for almost 2 years. At first, she worked for English schools, where it is easy to find jobs, being a native English speaker. You can make about R$ 10.00- R$12.00 an hour in a small town, where cost of living is not high. Working in a big city might get you double, tough, of course, you'll spend more to live. Now, we rented an apartment, where she gave out classes to groups of 3-6 people, twice a week. She made average R$ 35.00 an hour, which is over US$17.00, under the table, which basically represents over US$ 25.00 if you had to pay taxes on it. We have been back to Boston for 4 years and she has never made that kind of money up here, needless to say that we spent around US$ 400.00 a month to live in Brazil and it takes us around US$ 2500.00 monthly to live here. We have plans to move back soon! I hope it helps you!
Look for these schools:
FISK, CCAA, Wizard and Quality.

Russell Said:

Has anyone ever taught english in Brazil?

We Answered:

Awesome place!

But jobs aren't often advertised online so it's sometimes hard to find work there. A few teachers I know have got work simply by going down there just before the start of the school year and visiting all the schools they can find. (There are quite a few in the big cities.) They were hired on the spot and worked on tourist visas even though this was technically illegal (though it's common practice).

You'll need to take your qualifications with you - a degree and a TEFL certificate - of course.

Discuss It!
