Teach For America Salary

Claude Said:

How can I get paid to help the poor and disadvantaged?

We Answered:

Apply to the Red Cross, Salvation Army or another nonprofit.

Lillian Said:

Do you think colleges teaching young people to work for the disadvantaged after graduation is actually bad?

We Answered:

So rather than get people who are young and idealistic, you'd wait till they were burnt out and tired to do any sort of volunteer work? Young people have a pliability, a willingness to try new solutions, and the energy to deal with kids every day as a challenge. The flip side of "life experience is "set in your ways." "adapt to changes that requires a lot of mobility" is important to this sort of work.

A large number of young teachers burn out in less than five years. You can make speeches about 70 year old people having the same zip, but the reality is there is a reason people retire when they get older. Your argument is that it is better to spend your prime years on personal greed, saving your declining years for charity work would seem to just push the idea "greed is good." These programs are about contributing of yourself, not just giving cash. As you pointed out, these are the years for earning, so even you admit they are more valuable then those waning years.

Putting things off, because first you need to focus on yourself is a good way to never do anything but focus on yourself.

Guy Said:

I want to volunteer FOR FREE in Latin America?

We Answered:

Volunteer work is always needed in hospitals and things of that nature. Also, you may want to try local schools, if you'd like to teach English, i'm sure many school would be glad to have a speaker to talk with them.

Adrian Said:

Can i teach high school with a J.D. degree?

We Answered:

This likely varies from school system to school system. Where I live, people who are doing a career change have to do a teaching degree in order to teach in the public schools- they have a special program set up for these people, so it is not like going back to college for a new degree, but it does take a couple of years.

I don't know about Teach for America, but I just saw a news article today about NYC not hiring any new teachers, only in house people - so that is something to keep in mind during these touch economic times.

Robin Said:

Which is the best country in the world to live in if one were to teach English?

We Answered:

In the USA around Texas and Arizona would be a good place. There are a lot of people here in the US that don't speak English, and descrimination because of a disability is not allowed (not saying it doesn't happen, but there are legal ways to deal with that). Not only are English teachers needed for schools, but there are many adult English classes offered.

Bernard Said:

Which states have the highest and the lowest teacher salary, on average?

We Answered:

South Dakota pays the least; California pays the most.

Some of the top paying states require a masters degree to teach, not just a bachelors.
