Teach In Thailand

Emily Said:

I'm going to Thailand to Teach Buddhist Monks English and I was wondering?

We Answered:

The book mentioned above, Phra Farang, is a good one. But the thing that is missing is a guideline for lay people who are unfamiliar with Theravada Buddhism and Thai culture. There are many gotchas that Thais never think to tell visitors that are things you can easily run afoul of in daily life. A few examples:

A monk cannot receive something from the hand of a woman. So if you want to give him something you must give it to a male layperson to hand him or set it down and let him pick it up. Think of that when you are handing out assignments.

A monk cannot be alone with a woman in a room. So no individual tutoring. This extends to riding in a car so transportation must be planned properly if you all need to go somewhere.

Those and similar things can cause a monk a lot of trouble if they happen. He has to go to the abbot and confess what happened and undergo some remedial practice. It's best to try to help them keep all their precepts by not stumbling into such situations.

Other smaller things that help make life easier for monks like the fact that they are not allowed to eat solid food after lunch so it is sort of inconsiderate to have food around them in the evening, like during your dinner time or if you need a snack to get through the day.

Kent Said:

can i still teach in thailand or taiwan if i have a record?

We Answered:

I think you can. If you are a good teacher I don't know, but when I had some job-interviews in Thailand they didn't ask me if I had a record. And in Holland we don't get a record when we smoke pot (I just don't like it).

But don't do drug while you in Thailand. A lot of Thai do drug, but if YOU get caught you will be in jail and you don't want that in Thailand.

So if you are a good teacher and a good personality it would be no problem to find a teaching job in Thailand.

One tip: Dress nicely and be polite.
