Teach Your Child To Read
Ramon Said:
WHat age did you teach your child to read and do simple math?We Answered:
We've taught all of our kids to read before kindergarten. Just by reading lots of books, practicing letter sounds, writing simple words and having them sound them out, etc. I think the most helpful "tool" was alphabet fridge magnets. Our kids would sit in front of the refrigerator while I made dinner and I would say letters for them to find that would spell out a word, then they would have to sound it out. They loved it because they thought we were playing. For math, I just "taught" them whenever there was an opportunity. For example, if we were making cookies and I said "can you get me the 1/2 cup?" then we would go over why it takes two halves to make a whole cup, etc.
Roy Said:
when is the right time to teach your child to read a story book?We Answered:
I have been reading to my children since birth and they both now 'read' to each other at 3 and 4. Neither of them can read the words, but they take turns looking at the picture and narrating the story. Some of the Dr. Seuss books they have memorized and can actually do the book word for word, but they're not reading but reciting.
