Teaching assistant/nursery nurse expected to do teachers job?

We Answered:

I really feel for you. There is a tendency nowadays to get people with lower qualifications to do the jobs that used to be done by people with higher qualifications; they are expected to do a very similar job but do it for less money. This has happened in many sectors such as policing (with community support officers), nursing (auxiliaries), medicine (nurse practitioners doing the jobs doctors used to do) and teaching.

My advice would be to be clear about how much responsibilty you are comfortable taking on. Don't let them slowly use you for tasks that you are not being paid enough for.

Have been working as a teaching assistant for 9yrs and am having problems with my employer where do I stand?

We Answered:

May be they broke some rules by allowing you to work with the younger age group without a level 3? Were you supervised or unsupervised with them? usually unsupervised you need at least a level 3 but if you had a level three person supervising you it shouldn't have been a problem.

Would you like to get a level 3? if so then it may be appealing to your employer if you passed a level 3 course then may be you could go back to the nursery. Good luck what ever happens.

Edit: given you have 9yrs of experience I should think you would pass a level 3 quite easily and hopefully your employer might be willing to pay for your course as it is to the benefit of the company as well as yourself.

Edit: I don't know who your with but I work for Pre-School Learning Alliance south division. They pay for all my training on the job and are the best child care organisation I have ever worked for, they are so commited to us as staff I can't see myself ever leaving, here is a link for their vacancies I hope you find something because they will value all the experience you have with children. http://www.pre-school.org.uk/employment/ good luck.

Lawrence Said:

How much per hour should I expect to earn as a teaching assistant / LSA working for an agency ?

We Answered:

This would depend on your age. If you are under 22 you wouldn't receive the full wage as a lot of employers not necessary pay the minimum wage but they do conform to the age scale in relation to how much should be paid, for example on the nmw 18 - 21 would receive £4.45 per hour. and 22 and over would receive £5.52. I am not saying that this is what you would receive but this would be close to the increment that an employer would use depending on age.

From personal experience you should be looking from £6.50 - £9.00 per hour. Where and Who you work will also factor in this.

Another thing to think about when looking at the Annual Wage is that it will be pro rata due to it being term time only.

Hope that this helps.

Teaching assistant in Edinburgh?

We Answered:

Try the City of Edinburgh website.

Best way to to offer voluntary work to a local school and they will doubtless do what they can to get you paid hours as they get the funding.

You will need to authority to work with children of course, so if you already have clearance then that will be an advantage. See the disclosure link.
