Teaching Assistant Courses

Wayne Said:

How would a teaching assistant contribute to a lesson of 7 yr olds learning to play percussion instruments?

We Answered:

In my experience, the teaching assistant would help to distribute the instruments, to get the lesson going or distribute them while the teacher is introducing the lesson.

As the lesson continues, the asst. role is usually to reinforce what the teacher is saying or doing. Move around the group. Look for children who aren't listening or who don't understand what the teacher is saying to do. Repeat the teacher's instructions or clarify them. Maybe have an instrument herself to demonstrate to children what they should do. Stop children who are using them inappropriately so that the teacher can continue the lesson, rather than disrupting it.

Joan Said:

What grades and courses are required to become a teaching assistant e.g at a nursery or primary school?

We Answered:

At least in NC you need to have at least an associate degree in Early Childhood, or a Bachelor's degree in something else.

The job is fun, but there is a lot of making copies and doing grunt work. The salary isn't all that great, but then again its not great for teachers either!

We Answered:

Perhaps you could encourage the other kids to dance or march in time with the beat created , this at least might make the lesson fun and kids excel while having fun .

What qualifications / experiance do i have to have to be a teaching assistant?

We Answered:

You can start with doing a NVQ level 2 and get a job in a school whilst you are working towards this, or the 'teaching assistant certificate' but a school will rarely take you on without experience of working with children. Any work or voluntary work
