Should I feel guilty about studying abroad?

We Answered:

Trust me, you are making an EXCELLENT move by stydying abroad. Not only will there be extra knowledge and experience for you, when you get back you can earn and pay/help your parents financially after study. I hope to study overseas, and even if I have to borrow from a bank (I dunno how I'm going to,) I'd still go. The expierience and knowledge is worth it! Good Luck :D

Assistant in a Primary School?

We Answered:

I think this site may provide you with all the info you need. It is the TES (Times Ed Supplement) forum. All aspects are discussed there by everyone in education, from teachers, to assistants and parents. As a teacher, I use it a lot. I have given you the link for the teaching assistants forum. If you register on TES Connect (the forum pages) you can then pose as many questions as you like where, hopefully, you will get many answers about all aspects relating to this subject, as well as getting inside info from teaching assistants themselves.

Hope you find it useful.

Good luck with it all.

How to get into teaching training with a wage still?

We Answered:

OK teaching and teaching assistant are totally different things.

There are two major routes into teaching, one is a teaching degree, the other is a degree followed by a teaching qualification.

Have you considered doing a part time degree? You are in London so you could go to Birkbeck - it's part of the uni of London but all the classes are in the evening. But there are loads of places to study for a degree in London that have part time courses. It would be hard work and would take a number of years but if it is your dream go for it.

If you work in London you will be entitled to either 'inner London weighting' or 'outer london weighting' - which is basically extra money to cover the expense of living in London. I dont know how much it is im afraid, although for teachers its about 1500 - 2000 pa?

Help with personal statement?

We Answered:

Ok. Firstly, you need to break up your statement with a few commas, as it can sound a little breathless in places! Try reading it aloud as you have punctuated it: that should help you to sort out where you might need to insert a few 'breaks'!

Secondly - take out the section that says you "may not have everything you are looking for" - they don't need to have any 'negativity'. Although I understand you may be trying to be realistic and honest about your capacity for the job (i.e. you're not perfect in every single way), it just sounds perversely like you doubt your own suitability; I know this is not what you're trying to do however! Unfortunately, this is how it could read. So lose it. Lose the last part from thereon. It's too emotive: you need to treat this purely as a professional statement and that means sounding professional rather than emotional about things. Difficult to get the balance right but you're almost there.

My recommendation would be to finish it with, "I have drive and motivation and a genuine desire to enter the teaching profession, so I very much hope you see fit to offer me a place on your programme."

Thirdly, take out the "I love children". Unlikely you'd want to be a primary teacher if you didn't, and they hear this all the time. Change the next part to: "My personal attributes of patience, creativity, passion and pro-activity mean I believe that I am well-suited to the vocation of teaching. Take out "I have always thought of teaching as a vocational job" - again, I know what you mean is that you don't just see it as a means to an end, but teaching is by definition a 'vocational job', so your meaning may be misconstrued.

Try the amendments suggests and see how your personal statement reads after that. Remember: you need to balance enthusiasm with professionalism.

Good luck!
