When I was working as a teaching assistant (been retired a while now), I was paid monthly through the year, rather than being paid by the week. You need to do what one of the others suggested and contact your local education department personnel office to sort out your pay and conditions properly.

Aside from your teaching certificate, you will probably also need some kind of background in children with special needs - it might not be a requirement, but it will definitely make you look better among the other applicants for the job.

You would want to have at least a few courses regarding teaching children who are handicapped - that way saying that you had some good background knowledge wouldn't be a lie. If the school you attend offers a minor in education for children with special needs, that would be extremely beneficial to you as well.

Since you are salaried, your lender will qualify you based on the current salary of $72,000. They will look at the 08 and 09 returns, but only for the purpose of verifying the length of time you have been with your current employer. If your income from the previous years varied because you worked on commission or your hours had fluctuated they would use a more conservative amount for your qualifying income.

Lenders are trying to determine how much you will earn in the future, and your current salary is a better indication of that than previous salaries from lesser positions.

There is a scale for teaching assistants and as you are newly qualified you will be a level 1 assistant but the actual salary will be dependent on how many hours you do. Contact your LEA and they should be able to tell you the salary for full time level 1 TA which should help you.

I am sure that the school will be more than happy with your english degree and a willingness to learn about compassionately dealing with statemented children. Their statements may be for learning or behaviour, so do find that out. Some schools do want a qualified TA or Learning Support Assistant, but many do not need formal TA or LSA qualifications. Neither of these positions will help to train you for the two jobs you have stated that you wish to have in the future. If you want to work while you are going to college, both of these would be difficult as they are daytime positions and when you student teach, you need to be in the classroom, so I'm having difficulty understanding your philosophy on choosing one of these positions.

Personally, when I look for a job, I apply for everything that I'm qualified for. After many years, I was lucky enough to land a position as a paraprofessional. However, I worked a 2 hour playground position for those 2 years before I was considered for the position. There was also a civil service test to take, and you now have to pass a certification test in most states.

You can work as a daycare provider in a facility without having any schooling, however to be a preschool teacher will require a 2 or 4 year degree. Once again, most of these credits would not transfer towards a regular teaching degree.

There are very few paraprofessional opportunities in counties that do not have huge school systems. Most parapro's work with students who have learning disabilities or physical disabilities. There are more opportunities for daycare workers, and I would assume also for the pre-school teachers.

When you are working with students of any age or ability, your heart really needs to be there. Most of us do not work in this field because it has a great pay scale. Please consider your career choices carefully and make sure that this is not a casual choice. Our students deserve the most devotion they can get and your letter (question) suggests a casual attitude.
