Is it hard to find English teacher or assistant teaching jobs these days in NYC?

We Answered:

Those jobs exist. They are very short of substitutes too..

Joshua Said:

where do i search for English teaching or assistant teaching jobs.?

We Answered:

I would put an ad in the paper for the area you live in. Put your resume in every single school, make sure you look really sharp, and stay positive! Positive, confident energy will take you far! Remember, you are educated, and you are fabulous!

Are there any available teaching assistant jobs in Jersey CIty?

We Answered:

I assume from your question and explanation that you don't have a degree and you are looking at working more or less in a day care center atmosphere, rather than a public or private school setting. I would start with a local college, even a community college for requirements for a degree, and also check with the school board for requirements. Again, if it has nothing to do with the school district and strictly with day care operations, you would be best off talking direcltly with someone affiliated with an existing center and find out what their requirements are.

How much do graduate teaching assistants make?

We Answered:

It would indeed be wise to leave your job while pursuing your Ph.D.

However, a teaching assistantship provides a stipend, not a living wage. Stipends vary from school to school, depending on several factors, such as urban vs. rural, prestigious program vs. state school, and from discipline to discipline. (Stipends in the hard sciences are always much higher than stipends in the humanities and social sciences.)

Most stipends in language Ph.D. programs range from about 8000 per year to 14000 per year, depending upon the factors mentioned above. Assistantships also almost always prohibit ANY outside employment as a condition of acceptance. So unless your spouse is employed, you won't be able to support a family on a stipend.

However, if you can get an assistantship, you should not let the small stipend deter you. Keep in mind that your "pay" also includes full tuition remission, and that you will defer all student loans you already have (and you will be eligible to take new ones if necessary) while in the program. Many doctoral students with families just decide to "bite the bullet" financially for a few years. However, married Ph.D. students with children MUST have extremely supportive AND gainfully employed spouses for this to work.

I wish you every success.

ALT Assistant language teaching jobs in Japan with only a Associates?

We Answered:

If you have fluent Japanese, you should be trying to get a REAL job in business as a translator or something. Now is a terrible time to be job hunting for English teaching gigs, due to the Nova collapse. Already crappy ALT pay and work conditions will get even worse, with 5000 ex-Nova teachers desperate for a paycheck.

But most ALTs and eikaiwa workers who want to stay in Japan study Japanese hard for the chance of being able to get OUT, and get a real job, or at least a university gig. Anyone with fluent Japanese who is aiming to be a (as said above) human tape recorder must be nuts.

Anyway, Associate's isn't enough anyway. Work visas for such teaching require a bachelor's... OR "enough" years of work experience (which requires extra effort to prove, so no school is going to bother trying to get a visa for such a person). You have neither.
You COULD be eligible for other kinds of work visas, such as translation or business worker, but since you have fluent Japanese, you should be able to look up the relevant Immigration laws yourself.........
