up until recently, I was answering questions like this with "its not possible" The problem is the student teaching portion. Any state approved program must include three items:

1.coursework on methods and curriculum
2.verification of passing subject matter tests
3. student teaching.

all states require the above. This is why you see the massive amount of advertising for masters degrees - the schools have not figured out a way to do the student teaching portion. This *cannot* be done without you in a classroom with a university mentor coaching you through the assignment - thats a state requirement.

This means that the large national online schools could not dedicate the resources to cover the entire country. So you would see regional ideas - like CalState teach (this program is online, but requires you to already have your classroom - very limited in scope)

now I just looked at western governors website - and they claim to have a program -they also claim to have figured out how to do student teaching. I know no-one who has completed it, nor do I know if it is truly entirely online. perhaps you might want to look at it...

Make sure! that it is accepted as a valid program in your state - all states list their approved programs at their certification website.

There are universities you can get some teacher education on, but to get your final teaching license (in Ohio anyways) you must pass a test called Praxis II before beginning the program and then student teach for 16 weeks at the end of your program. Each state is different though. Also, be careful that your state department of education recognizes the online university as a highly qualified and accredited institution- because if they do not, you will waste a lot of time and money. I would contact you state department of education to find out what your options are.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of reputable colleges that offer distance learning education leading to a teaching certificate. First, which state's teaching certificate do you hope to earn? Go to that state's department of education home page and look for certification requirements. Many states will include a list of colleges with state-approved programs. You can also try inserting keywords into your browser's search engine like "new jersey secondary certification distance education" or something similar. You will get tens of thousands of hits. I would then go to the advanced preferences setting and limit my search to .edu domains. There are many books at Amazon that you could purchase that feature guides to online degrees. Be sure to get one that is no more than a year old. Major universities around the nation, and zillions of smaller ones, are adding new routes to certification via distance ed. And many programs are far cheaper than traditional, in-person schools. No room and board! No lab or health clinic fees! No parking stickers! But the VERY most important thing? Make absolutely sure that the institution is fully accredited by a recognized accrediting board! If the school isn't accredited, all your hard work and money will be wasted!! Good luck--I personally think distance ed is the wave of the future in education. I am working on a Master's degree in Science Ed--in my jammies!

It depends if it is accredited or attached to a bigger University. Some schools have parial online classes and some on site. I think it isn't a good program if it is only online because you are teaching...you need to be in a classroom at some point!
Be careful though. I know at my school we can tell during job interviews if someone went to a strong teacher school and one who didn't. I

the problem is the student teaching portion. Because each state requires a program that includes this, such programs can only be created regionally. This is not a situation where the larger online schools can deal with - this is why you see the huge number of online masters degree programs. A masters degree is not sufficient to teach. You need a credential.

There are limited regional programs such as calstate teach - but they require you to have a classroom already. odd - how can you have a classroom without a credential? This singular program is set up to take advantage of the teacher shortage - there are a number of districts who must still offer emergency credentials - this programs is geared to them. You earn it while you teach.

Another poster is correct - it is becoming increasingly common - just not for credentials. What you can do however is go to your states credentialing board - there is always a list of approved programs for that state.

If a state is smaller - and teams up with a local university - there might be a geographic incentive to offer such a program as you wish - I have never seen one - but really would like someone to research and prove me wrong.

The criteria Id like to see:

completely online, deals with student teaching, offers a full clear credential in that state, no requirement for you to already have a classroom.
