Teaching Certification Programs

Tamara Said:

What are some alternate route to teaching certification programs in California?

We Answered:

There are tons. The full list of approved programs is on the states website - You'll have to go through them to see which are alternative in nature.

A typical program is similar to UCLA's:

2 years in length.

Requirements for teaching certification (majors vs programs)?

We Answered:

You'll actually need to get your teaching credential on top of your regular degree. Most traditional credential programs require you to have a Bachelor's degree before you begin the certification process. But some universities offer a combined program where you get the degree and credential at the same time. If your school offers this, you'll need to look into that and see if you can keep the psych minor.

The English degree is appropriate because it will fulfill your requirements for "subject matter competency." The psych major/minor shouldn't hurt, but it will take you longer to finish with everything.

By the way, with No Child Left Behind and all that, you most likely won't be able to get a job with just the English degree. You'll ultimately need that teaching credential before you can work.

Greg Said:

I have a BA but not in teaching, what should i do or are there certification programs for teaching in NYC?

We Answered:

To be a qualified teacher, one will be required to have achieved certain credentials. The credential requirements will differ from state to state as different state will have their own set of teaching credential requirements. Generally there are some basic credentials which are required before one is able to teach in a proper institution, they are; Single Subject Credential, Education Specialist Credential, and Multiple Subject Credential. These are the fundamental requirements for all states. On top of the list given, different states might have other types of teaching credentials they are looking for.

A Multiple Subject Credential will enable the applicant to apply for a teaching position in a grade school teaching environment. Where they will be given the power to teach inside a classroom in which one teacher handles different subjects, academic or otherwise.

As for teachers holding the Single Subject Teaching Credentials, they will be given the opportunity to teach the subject of their specialty. This is applicable to both high school and junior high school students, and anywhere else that follows a departmentalized form of instruction.

Any teaching certification programs that pay while training?

We Answered:

No.

Certification is considered college work. There are no colleges that pay you to take their classes.

edit: the person who said I am wrong gave a link to a UK site. fell free to find an active program in the US in this economy. They have all closed.

Does anyone have any advice on alternative or accelerated teaching programs?

We Answered:

It depends on what state and city you live in. Most large cities have programs for post-baccalaureate teaching licenses because they always have a shortage of any kind of teacher. I live in Milwaukee and they have a program for that and so does Chicago. I also know that New York City has a program. Check out the website for the school district that you live in. The information is usually listed there.

The program in Milwaukee you are in the classroom the first year and has you meet for classes one evening a week. You also have a supervisor who meets with you in your classroom for on the job training. You take out loans to pay for the program, but you also get paid to be a teacher the first year before you get the license. After 3 years of teaching in Milwaukee, your loans are forgiven by the government.

I didn't go through the program but I know several teachers who have and they are glad that they did. They got to teach right away (and make money) and the classes were very informative and helpful, unlike many college courses.

The only draw back is that you can be assigned to a difficult school in some of these cities, however the vast majority of people finish the program.

If you are not in a city that has programs like this, I would also contact the school district. They might have a shortage of math or science teachers and they could help you find a federal program that can help you.

Colleges ususally are not helpful in regards to this matter, because they want you to go back to school full time and take their classes, however some colleges are associated with and have programs for post-baccalaureate teaching licenses. Some also will grant you a master's degree upon completion.

I hope this was helpful and good luck to you in obtaining such a rewarding profession.

Masters of arts in teaching programs with certification?

We Answered:

Some states do require a Masters, such as NY....I go to the U of R and they specialize in training teachers who did not major in education as undergrads. Check out New York Schools for education programs, there are a lot of them. I am in Rochester and I know of U of R, Nazareth, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Geneseo...all good schools..the SUNY ones are cheap (I recommend cheap). Anyway, check out NY schools. Some schools will give you an MS instead of an MAT as well and I think the MS looks better.

Discuss It!
