Teaching English As A Second Language
Rick Said:
Tips on teaching English as a second language please? We Answered:
yeah, choose authentic topics, from every day experiences (like going to the mall, to a restaurant, to a supermarket). include some grammar in every lesson, show them videos and songs and tell them to discuss something in particular. they need to talk so make them talk about stuff which relates to the American culture and which they need to use in their everyday living. Good Luck.Jennifer Said:
Can I get a job teaching english as second language abroad? We Answered:
To teach English abroad you are expected to have a degree and a T.E.F.L Dip/Cert. If you are a non EU citizen you find it hard to get work in any of the 27 EU countries. The reason is under EU law an employer has to advertise the job in all 27 EU countries before hiring someone from outside the EU. Too much paper work and red tape. He/She would have to prove that they couldn't get anyone from anyone from the 27 EU countries to do the job. Most T.E.F.L teachers in the EU are British/Irish both EU citizens and no visa or paper work involved. I think it's two years to get a degree USA.Victoria Said:
What kind of degree should i get If i am interested in teaching English as a second language? We Answered:
It really depends on where you plan to teach. I know many highly qualified ESOL teachers who have a wide variety of teaching degrees and simply added on an ESOL certificate by taking classes. You may want to contact the school district in which you plan to teach. They should have a phone extension or web link for the ESOL department. Good people are always needed! :) Good luck to you.

The article "Standards for Good Teaching" states that a good teacher should:- be joyful
- love the natural curiosity of students
- be excited about learning
- be passionate about the subject they teach
- be inquisitive
- be creative
- seek help from others
- not be afraid of change and realize that change can be a positive element in every classroom
- be flexible or have the ability to roll with the punches and not let the little things get them down.

You could also see a career counselor. They often have a list of characteristics, pros and cons for a multitude of careers. Not to mention the tests you can take to find out what type of employment matches your personality.

Teaching English as second language career opportunities? We Answered:
How far are you willing to move? LOLI have some friends from Taiwan, China and South Korea. They constantly tell me that there are a lot of jobs available over in Asia to teach English. A lot of people just want someone to practice with.
If you graduated from a university, their career center may be able to give you contacts for legitimate companies that can help you get a contract to do this sort of thing.
The university that I graduated from also advised students interested in this sort of work to do some good research on companies offering these opportunities. You probably want to use a lawyer's help, too, for the contract to make sure you get a good one.

I would like to get a job teaching English as a second language? What are the qualifications? We Answered:
If your friend wants to become a public school teacher, then once he/she has graduated from college, he/she needs to get a Teaching Credential. Some universities have internship programs that could be quite benenficial in gaining experience before taking the plunge. Each state has different requirements, but any reputable teaching credential college will be able to guide him/her and will have the most up-to-date information on what's necessary. If he/she just wants to teach casually to adults in night school, it's likely that all he/she needs is a college degree. He/She should contact his/her local Adult Education office and find out.
As for the job outlook for the teaching profession, it is very good. Teaching is a tough, stressful, politically-charged job that does not pay well in comparison to someone in another field with the same level of education and experience. In short, few people want to do it! This leaves rather a wide-open market for teachers.
BTW, although it is commendable that your friend is fluent in Spanish (I am, as well), it is ENGLISH as a Second Language, not Spanish, that he/she needs to teach. Unlesss it is a Spanish bilingual immmersion program, speaking Spanish to ESL students is a no-no and will impede their progress in using English. Not to mention that it will piss off the Koreans, Chinese, Russsians, and others taking the class!

Where can I find articles about Holistic Approach in Teaching English as a Second Language? We Answered:
I don't recommend searching the web to find academic articles. If you are a college student, go to your campus library. They will have good databases of journal articles. As a grad student studying TESOL, I always used a database called ERIC. Your campus library will probably have it, and the librarian can show you how to use it. It's the best source for finding high-quality articles on education topics.
