Teaching English as a foreign language?

We Answered:

It doesn't really matter what you minor in, as teachers of English as a second language have all kinds of academic backgrounds. What you will need, if you want the best opportunities, is a formal qualification in TEFL/TESOL, such as CELTA. This is a fairly intensive course of study and involves assessed teaching practice.

Felicia Said:

Teaching english as a foreign language? Is it really as good as the brochere makes it out to be?

We Answered:

Hey,

I have spent a total of 7 months teaching in Zambia. Yes, it is hard work, and can be challenging at times, but the old cliche 'you get out of it what you put in' certainly rings true. I have seen volunteers only teaching as 'something to put on their C.V'- and they are normally not 100% into the teaching, or interested as such with getting to know the students.

Whenever I go to Zambia to teach, I always take my time, getting to know the students and in some cases their families. This way, I have learnt so much about the country and their culture. I have made countless friends in Zambia- the majority of which are past students; and I love going there, and every single minute that I am there I really enjoy it.

If you do decide to teach English- be yourself; have a great time and don't be afraid to get to know the students and the teachers- it will change your perspective of the country greatly.

Hope this helps!
Matt.

Activity ideas for teaching English as a foreign language to toddlers?

We Answered:

He'll pick it up like a sponge at his age. Google ESL for kids and lots of websites will pop up.
If you can use the kitchen, simple cooking is fun for kids and there are recipes online for no-cook recipes. Make sure you keep talking to him, and explain everything you do in English. "Mummy wants us to tidy your room. Can you put away the........" And you can help him make labels for things in his room. He may not be reading yet, but you can combine words and pictures. You can also learn a bit of Italian at the same time! Try
to organize things by theme. If you go to the park, note all the playground words you use.
Make sure he learns the proper way to ask for things and to say thank you -- courtesies are often ignored, even in ESL classes. If you happen to meet any other nannies who are minding English speaking children, you might be able to arrange play dates, with parental permission of course.
Young children learn well from each other.

If teaching English as a foreign language in France, is it more important to have a B.A. in English or French?

We Answered:

Kate hate to tell you this, you will find it hard to get a job teaching English in France. One if your not an EU citizen there is very little hope of getting a job teaching in EU members states. The reason for this is most language schools, plus state school prefer to hire EU citizens from the UK or Ireland. Any employer has to prove that he/she cannot get anyone to fulfill the teaching vacancy. The employer has to advertise the job in all 27 EU countries before he/she would apply for someone outside the EU. To much red tape to do so. Most English teachers teaching in Europe tend to study the Masters in T.E.F.L Well if your getting French citizenship then do the B.A degee in English, and later do the MA in English. Best of luck to you. Bon voyage
