Teaching English In Hong Kong

Alma Said:

Teaching english in Hong Kong?

We Answered:

Most Chinese schools (lower and middle) will accept you if you complete the year long intensive course (equivalent to 2 year teaching cerificate). The good thing is that you can use this cert in almost any country as it is recognised worldwide.

Added to this that you are a native speaker of the English language - and boom you are in. It will also allow you to apply for a Visa relating to skilled professional (the Higher professor jobs) . Unless you have a degree or this certificate , some placement groups will not consider you.

A degree is preferential however I have come across graduate teachers (recent and "long in the tooth") that are poorly suited, miseducated and absolutely out of their league in the classroom. I have witnessed teacher aids doing a better job.

Good luck and happy hunting - Korea is also good.

How does a foreigner go about finding a job teaching English in China or Hong Kong?

We Answered:

First off is qualifications. You'll need a degree (although there are still possibilities if you do not have this) and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to get a visa and work.

The degree can be in almost any subject as it is usually required for the visa only so you will find teachers with a degree in Engineering or Sociology. Having said this, to help get the job it's obviously better to be English or language related, for example a degree in English literature.

The TEFL certificate can be taken either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option (see http://icalweb.com).

Then it's a matter of finding work. There are different options there. If you're qualified then you can search the jobs online and browse through them to get a feel of what is out there. There are often plenty of jobs in China.

You can also contact an agent (whom you should NEVER pay) and use them to get you a job.

Finally - and this is often helpful if you aren't fully qualified - you can actually get over to China on a tourist visa and use your time there to find work simply by blitzing the town and visiting every single school to see if they need a teacher.

Good luck!
