Teaching English Overseas

Samuel Said:

How to start teaching English overseas?

We Answered:

Firstly, choose a region such as South America or the Far East that interests you. Then do some online research to narrow down your search. Think not only about the place and what it would be like to live and work in but also how easy it will be to find teaching English overseas work there. There are loads of sites on the web that can help – TEFL sites, ESL job boards, forums.

When you have a good idea of where you want to go and whether it is a viable option consider doing a TEFL course. This puts many people off as they are expensive and very intensive but most new teachers say it is well worth it. Teaching is not something you can just walk into. You need knowledge, not only of ESL but how to teach as well as practice and experience. Also this will give you a good idea of what the job is really like and if it is for you. Furthermore you can usually do the course in the country you want to teach in. This can often get you a job directly saving a good deal of time and money.

There is a new download resource called Teach English Abroad – The Complete Guide http://www.teachenglishabroadguide.com that might interest you. The package aims to provide everything a prospective teacher needs to start their new teaching career. It contains 3 books - one book on finding ESL jobs, one on where to teach English overseas with reviews of countries and a book on how to teach English as a Foreign Language.

Avoid teaching English in China. You will be spied on, and in many cases you won't be paid the money you were promised.

What is the easiest way to start teaching english overseas?

We Answered:

Without experience you will probably find the CELTA an extremely difficult and intensive course to take. Since you are going to China almost any TEFL certificate will be suitable although without a degree you might find it harder to find work there. Some regions inisist on a degree whilst others are more open.

Recruitment companies (whom you should NEVER pay, by the way) may not be interested since you don't have a degree. Your only option may be to fly to China and literally go knocking on school doors till you find work. You wouldn't be the first to do this successfully!!

Florence Said:

Know anything about teaching English overseas?

We Answered:

The "best" places to teach is subjective. Depends on what you are looking for in a culture. France is quite different from Korea, for example.

The demand varies by country and the ease of obtaining work permits also varies by country.
