Teaching English Resources

Kristina Said:

I'm going to be teaching a ten-year-old Cambodian girl English. Any suggestions for resources or general tips?

Go to Amazon and do a search for TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language). You'll find pages of books on the topic there.

There are literally hundreds of college level text books about the topic since language acquisition is a field of Linguistics... so it is very popular amongst English speaking Linguists. You'd have to go searching around to find them.

I'd give you the names of the ones I've used in the past, but I'm no where near home right now so can't get a look at them.

When talking about kids though, you have it easy. They already have great ability to learn language. With very basic instruction start letting them converse with other kids their age in English. Basic instruction followed by immersion will get kids a long way very quickly.

Another winner with kids is games. Find games that involve words, start with easy games and work up as your student progresses. You can probably google search "TESL games" or a similar search criteria and get some great ideas.

Good luck! Remember, a kid that age will learn quickly. Don't ever understimate them and keep the instruction challenging.

How can i get a job teaching English in Cuba?

We Answered:

I'm glad you want to do that but it gets very complicated if you are an American citizen.
