Questions about teaching English to adults?

We Answered:

Adults prefer to learn how to build sentences. They rely on logic.

Everett Said:

i will start teaching adults english language this Month,,They are beginners,do You have any?

We Answered:

Role playing- with real props. These guys need conversational English
they can use.eg: Set up a shop, they have to practice asking,
Can I have a bottle of milk, a dozen eggs, use junk mail and cut out the picture- that's the item they need to ask for.
Another scenario, making a doctors appointment.

Form filling using real forms-(doctor, school, drivers licence) easy to get and photocopy for class.

Photos of everday objects- they have to name them. Say something about it.

http://bogglesworldesl.com/ has good material.

Could be either or neither. I'd tell him to look for another teacher.

Celta qualification teaching english to adults abroad?

We Answered:

If you have completed a CELTA you ought to be able to handle a class without any recourse to their mother tongue, so long as they are not total beginners. In Greece where I lived for 15 years complete beginners are usually taught by Greek speakers and native speaker teachers are assigned to higher levels. This is not good for your development! New teachers ought to be given low level classes of students whose L1 they do NOT know, so they develop all the tricks of the trade - language grading, use of visuals and mime, creation of context, etc. Knowledge of the students L1 is a useful resource to have, obviously, but one you can manage without. Lots of Greek teachers end up talking about English in Greek rather than developing their students' ability to communicate.
