Racism, etc. Teaching in Hawaii Public Schools? We Answered:
It will really depend on where you are teaching. Some neighborhoods are very mixed, others are more homogeneous. As you can imagine, the less variety in ethnicity in a particular neighborhood, the more likely you will be to run into racism. I think that our racism is not as bad as many places on the mainland. But some haoles have a hard time, as they are not used to being on the receiving end of racism where they lived before, so they may have not even been aware it existed, or at the minimum, minimized it. But here, there is a certain amount of local vs mainland haole tension. If you come here with the right attitude - respectful, interested in learning about Hawaii & accepting local customs, then you will do fine. On the other hand, if you arrive with the attitude that Hawaii is a backwater & keep talking about how much better it is "back home" or about "what Hawaii really needs is______"... well then, you could be in for a bumpy ride.As far as finances go, well, your money certainly won't go as far here. The cost of living is high & this is a hard place to get a start with buying a home, etc. But you say you are interested in relocating here for a year. Under those circimustances, you might be able to handle a temporary decline in your financial situation, in order to enjoy living & working in Hawaii for a year.

Teaching in Hawaii Public Schools/ Racism, etc.?We Answered:
My best friend is an elementary school teacher in Hawaii. There are many many many teachers that she works with who have relocated from the mainland. Racism is not an issue. She has problems with the No Child Left Behind act, but that's another issue altogether.
Pay is a problem - teachers in Hawaii are not paid much, especially when you consider the cost of living. Houses that are government-subsidized that are considered part of "affordable housing" are around $400K.
I was making about $20K more than what teachers make on Kauai, and still had trouble affording to live there. I hope you have a dual income household if you are considering it ... or if you don't mind renting a room from someone. There are families where both parents have full-time jobs, and they are still homeless and living on the beaches.

I was shot down for a job teaching in rural Hawaii. Age Any ideas of alternative jobs working with children? We Answered:
Do you live in Hawaii now? If not, do you know the local culture? It's not the same as the mainland. Working with children there could be frustrating for you if you are not aware of the environment in which you would be working. Do you feel you were you rejected because of age? Too young or too old? Was it just one institution or several? Was it in person or by phone/web? Don't give up if you really want to do this. Lack of knowledge about the local culture would be as likely a reason for rejection as age, maybe more so. Many, many mainlanders consider moving to Hawaii by pursuing employment in their area of qualification. It is possible, many have done it, but there is a lot to know before making this large step. It can be a very rewarding experience or a miserable mistake. I'll help you determine which if you want.Eddie Said:
I want to teach in Hawaii, what should be my first step?We Answered:
You should go ahead and check into it now since you are in school. The transcript analyst at your school can tell you what you will be able to be certified for based on your degree. You will also have to take some education classes that help you with classroom management and assessment. I would obtain a license for the state you are in which most likely help you get a license in Hawaii (if that is not where you are already living). You will also have to take the Praxis tests. Believe me, its a lot of hoops to jump but you just have to do it. Now I will say that there are several states that have programs for professionals such as yourself that offer a lateral way of moving into teaching, you just obtain your certificate as you are teaching and have mentors help you. But usually these are areas of shortages and you have to check each state individually to see what is available. Good luck to you!
