Teaching In Texas

Bryan Said:

How can I legally quit my Texas teaching job, when I am under contract?

We Answered:

35 students. don't you have a teacher's union? That's where I'd start. In Wisconsin, 35 students would be against the law.

Harry Said:

How does the Texas Teaching Fellows work?

We Answered:

The website states, "Texas Teaching Fellows is a highly selective alternative certification program dedicated to bringing achievement-oriented individuals into Texas’ most high-need schools and subject areas. Practice teaching in a summer school classroom, combined with our rigorous training during the school year, helps our Fellows to be effective in the classroom from day one. Fellows earn their certification during their first year of teaching, and are eligible for a standard teaching certificate by the end of the school year."

The Texas Teaching Fellows is an alternative route to teacher certification. There are "Fellow"s programs, a national program to get teachers into classrooms, in many states, and they are by region:

East Coast
* Baltimore City Teaching Residency
* DC Teaching Fellows
* Newark TeacherNex NEW
* New York City Teaching Fellows
* Philadelphia Teaching Fellows
* Prince George's County Teaching Fellows
* Rhode Island Teaching Fellows NEW
Midwest
* Chicago Teaching Fellows
* Denver Teaching Fellows
* Indianapolis Teaching Fellows
* Milwaukee Teaching Fellows
* Saint Paul Teaching Fellows
South / Southwest
* Louisiana Teaching Fellows NEW
* Memphis Teaching Fellows
* Nashville Teaching Fellows NEW
* Phoenix Teaching Fellows
* TeachNOLA (New Orleans, LA)
* Texas Teaching Fellows
West Coast
* Oakland Teaching Fellows

If you meet the criteria it is an excellent chance because you take classes under professors and master teachers, you are assigned to a classroom with a master teacher, you are paid a salary to learn, and in many cases the district where you taught offers you a position.

Go for it, in my opinion it is a win-win proposition

Jenny Said:

What hoops must I jump through to get a Texas teaching license?

We Answered:

Here's the info online: http://www.sbec.state.tx.us/SBECOnline/c…

Basically, it seems to be that you have to take the TX certification test. That's what happened to my friend who moved there. She was certified in PA and VA but still had to do the TX testing. Besides that, it wasn't too complicated.

Marlene Said:

Educators in Texas, do you think they should have to re-new thier teaching certificates?

We Answered:

Yes. If a teacher is adequate to pass a teacher's exam 20 years ago, they may not be today. As the youth becomes more intelligent, are teachers will have to keep up with the times. The cons are some teachers may lose jobs if they cannot pass the test. It is a lot to ask of a teacher but it is a smart idea.

Joel Said:

How can I get a Texas teaching certificate? I am already a licensed elementary teacher in another country.?

We Answered:

Go to this website:

http://www.sbec.state.tx.us/SBECOnline/c…

It is in the Teacher Certification section of the Texas State Board of Education website. It should answer any questions you may have. You will have to take some tests and possibly a few college courses, but there are several different routes available to you.

Good luck!
