Annette Said:

How advanced in USA is teaching ecological principles in elementary school?

We Answered:

Surely, the issue of the environment should be taught by example in the schools with the school being involved actively in green issues. The kids will then see this as a normal part of everyday life and when they become adults, will be more likely to embrace the message.

How to land a teaching job in USA?

We Answered:

In addition to what Dragonfly_3 suggests,

Credentialing requirements vary by State...so check with your State Dept of Education and schools with teacher training programs. Read the college catalogs carefully about entrance requirements and graduation requirements.

In some States, there may be additional tests required for full credentialing.

For secondary (high school) teaching, you need to have a major subject teaching area (e.g. college major for your degree). Consider that in high school, a single teacher is in a classroom teaching a specific subject...math, chemistry, physics, etc. But also realize the more different subject areas you can teach, the better a chance you have of being hired and retained. And also be aware that not all major subjects for a degree may be recognized as a valid teaching subject. I know of a case where an MA in Geography was not accepted to teach Geography because according to the School district, Geography degrees were NOT listed as a teaching subject area....yet the Geography classes taught in the school district could be taught by ANY person with just about any social science subject area major....econ, history, psych.

For elementary education, no major subject area is needed. Usually this credential is heavy on early childhood development...closely related to some areas of psychology.

Regardless of how fully accepted your degree is, practice teaching is often required for a full credential. In some states this may also require a work permit...not an automatic thing with most visas. However, as a student, there's flexibility but check on the details.

However, some States have severe teacher shortages and have "emergency" credential options in place. These are often conditional....the conditions being you teach (and get paid) but must be concurrently enrolled in a teacher certification / credentialing program and should finish in a stipulated time frame. Generally, the folks in this type of program have a college degree but are entering the teaching profession without having gone through a teacher training major.

If additional schooling is required, you probably need to get a Student Visa (or check on the visa status you plan to use when coming to the US to see if you can "adjust" the status after you enter the country). And that also entails non-resident tuition (higher fees) at the schools.

To get an idea of the variations in pay, visit something like www.salary.com and see what elem and secondary teachers are paid in different cities/states of the US. It might influence your thinking about where to locate.

hope this helps you...best wishes in your quest.
