Teaching ESL?We Answered:
Pull-out is common at the elem level almost everywhere. The other model that is sometimes used is just having an entire ESL classroom, where the teacher teachers all the subjects to a whole class of ESL students. Usually, you have to be certified in elem ed as well as ESL to do this. Occasionally, some elem ESL teachers do what is called push-in, where the go into the students' classrooms to work with them there.ESL is in higher demand than many other subject areas. However, the need is VERY dependent on the location. Some places don't need ESL teachers at all, while in others they can't hire enough to meet their needs. In most inner cities, you'd probably find districts that are looking for ESL teachers. I think you'd be able to find a job in MD fairly easily, or if you were in N VA and have your ESL certification, it's very easy getting an ESL job.
