Teaching Jobs In Ontario

Kent Said:

Where are the most teaching jobs? (which province or which country?)?

We Answered:

Ontario is currently experiencing a TEACHER SURPLUS - i.e., there are too many teacher graduates and too few jobs. This is due to many factors. In addition to graduates of Ontario BEd programs competing for jobs, you have graduates from other Canadian provinces, from so-called Buffalo Border Colleges (which certify Ontario teachers with much easier admissions requirements), from teacher's colleges in the UK/Australia/Ireland/New Zealand (which certify Ontario teachers with much easier admissions requirements), and from immigrants to Canada who trained to be teachers in their home countries.

Please note that Ontario BEd graduates have a much easier chance of landing a teaching position than an Ontarian who went to Buffalo or internationally for his/her training.

Try these websites: www.jobsineducation.com (for Canada teacher jobs) and www.timeplan.com (for UK teacher jobs).

Joan Said:

Is it possible for a person from the states to get a teaching job in Ontario?

We Answered:

I am not sure of the answer but if you go to

www.oct.ca

there is information there. This is the Ontario College of Teacher's website and it will give you as much information as possible, as well as contact numbers.

Best of luck.

Where should I look to find a job teaching English in Ottawa, Ontario?

We Answered:

Smiley is correct. Since English is one of Canada's official languages I doubt that anyone employed by the government would need tuition. You might check to see if there a government-run programs for new
immigrants, or google English language schools in Ottawa and see what pops up.

How to qualify as a teacher in Ontario?

We Answered:

Hi there,
You will need to go get a one year degree from a Faculty of Education in a University in the province (sometimes called Teacher's College).

Then shortly before graduation, you will need to apply to the Ontario Ministry of Education for teacher certification. This usually involves paying a small fee, and getting a criminal record check.

Check with the Faculty of Education or Teacher's College at your University to find out what their entry requirements are. Also keep in mind that different Universities will have different entry requirements. Applications for these programs usually are due anywhere from the beginning of December till the end of February, so get cracking on it soon. Also, these programs usually have large information sessions and you can often make appointments to talk to student advisers. I would advise you to speak with someone at the school your applying to beforehand so that you can find out what you're getting in to.

To get entry to a teacher training program is usually very competitive and depends on what subject you took as an undergraduate degree. Since English is the most common subject that teachers apply with, you will most likely be competing against a lot of people for a small number of spots. The entry process is usually based on some combination of any or all of the following: University marks, interview, statement or rationale for interest in teaching, and possibly a written test.

Also, in the Province of Ontario right now, teachers are not currently "in demand" and you may have to accept a lot of part time temporary work before you get a permanent position. It is easier to find work as a visible minority, with math or science teachers, or in small remote rural areas.

All of that being said, it is a career that you will never regret. And if you choose to go forward with this, I wish you the best of luck.

With a Masters in teaching, from Jamaica, how can I get a teaching job in Cambridge,Ontario?

We Answered:

contact the Ontario Ministry of Education--you can be hired on a temp basis so long as you fulfill the educational requirements in the interim. While you have a Master's in teaching from Jamaica, that does not necessarily mean you are familiar with the pedagogical approaches that are the norm in Ontario, nor the standards. I can't imagine that they would require you to do much more than you already have.
