Looking for teaching jobs in NYC, what kind of salary can I expect? We Answered:
starts around 43,000 for BA, about 48 for MAGet a roommate, preferably another teacher who teaches at another school than yours. You can get a decent room (with a roommate, not by yourself), depending on where you teach from anywhere between 700-1200 per month, depending on how nice of a place you want to live, which will leave you with approximately 1400-1800 dollars per month for everything else. Neighborhoods that teachers I know live in are Brooklyn, Astoria, Upper West Side near Amsterdam, and Greenpoint. It just depends on where you teach as to where you should live and then on how nice of an apartment you want to live in. Look on craigslist when you arrive to find a temporary room. After you make friends you can get a more trusted roommate. Good luck. You will earn every penny of that salary, lol. I'll let you find out what I am talking about once you get here! Ha Ha HA AHA HA AHAHAHAHA

Is it hard getting a teaching job in NYC ?We Answered:
Actually, "political fanatic" is wrong... In NYC, public school teachers get paid MUCH more than our private school counterparts. Public school teachers also get much better benefits... but we do deal with "worse" kids, in terms of behavior and achievement levels.Teaching in NYC is wonderful-- challenging, rewarding, interesting. But it's definitely a huge system, so it can be easy to get lost in it or overwhelmed.
Unfortunately, it's pretty tough to get a job teaching in NYC right now, due to budget cuts. My school laid off three experienced teachers for next year, because there's just not enough money. The rest of us will be teaching classes that are stuffed to the brim.
But you should still try! You can start teaching here with just a BA in your subject area (and certification, of course), but NYC requires a Masters in education or a related field if you want to keep your teaching job beyond the first few years. In trying to get the most out of every dollar in this horrible economy, it seems that many principals are only interested in applicants who already have their MA/MS degrees-- or are at least already enrolled in graduate school.
I am on the hiring committee at my school, and I suggest coming in to interviews with a full sample curriculum (at least 5 copies to pass around) and lots of ideas for the classroom and school community.
Good luck :)

Teacher that wants to move to NYC-- NOT to teach. Any suggestions for jobs?We Answered:
This is a bad time to do this. There was a time when teachers could move into other jobs in the City...in educational publishing, for example.
But these days, teachers are lucky to have teaching jobs. The publishing companies have all cut back. Plus, there are lots of people losing their jobs here in finance, and they are a glut on the job market in general.
I would recommend that you either stay in Texas (not something I would usually recommend, since I always encourage people to come to NYC, if their heart leads them here) or think about teaching for the NYC public schools.
I am a NYC public school teacher, and you can make a living here working for the Dept. of Education. You would not come in at the starting salary, because you have experience in Texas. You would start at a higher level than the starting salary. But you would need a NY Teaching Certification.
I'm sorry, I know this is not what you want to hear, but I'm afraid it is a realistic answer to your question. It is not easy for a person in your situation to find a non-teaching job right now.

Have an interview with NYC teaching fellows- likelihood of job?We Answered:
You are very likely to get the job. They are desperate for teachers in NYC because so many teachers cannot handle the students there.
